SYNOD WATCH

The CBCEW issued our National Synthesis Document on 22nd June, 2022.

This summarises all our submissions to the Synodal Process. It was braver than we expected.

It states clearly that many responses called for redress of abuse, the ordination of women, an end to exclusion of LGBTQ+ people and other critical issues. Our various responses often see the Church as a self-serving institution.

The CBCEW have now released 'A Reflection: Seeking Our Hearts' Desire' to accompany the Synthesis above to the Continental phase, and thence to Rome by October 2023.

'We know', it says,'... that we have a duty to defend human life and human rights,... to eliminate injustice'. Yet it mentions the word 'women' once only in all its pages. Where are women's human rights?

Click on both Documents to read them for yourself.

In 2021 Pope Francis called for all Catholics worldwide, and others, to tell him the pros and cons of our Church. Each parish, then each diocese, was to produce a report. Then each country was to send this national synthesis to the next continental phase, and thence to Rome in 2023.

A team of nine lay and religious produced our National Synthesis, above top, collating what we wrote for the bishops' assent.

Yet their own accompanying letter, their initial Reflections, above, is disappointing. Yet again, we are told that it is up to the Bishops to 'discern' our responses.

Root & Branch spokesperson Penelope Middelboe said:

'The Bishops’ National Synthesis of the views of Catholics in England and Wales issued on 22nd June 2022 was braver than we’d expected. It included statements such as

‘the [clerical] abuse scandal was frequently described as destroying the Church’s credibility’,

‘the crisis is seen as a dramatic indictment … of an institution seen as self-serving rather than serving, concerned with itself and its own reputation,’

‘many call in the reports for women to be ordained as deacons and priests’,

‘A constant voice in the reports laments the exclusion and sidelining of LGBTQ+ Catholics’.

The National Synthesis reports that parishioners say 'they want their voice heard' and 'many expressed scepticism' that nothing would change. The report added, ‘there is a genuine fear that the prophetic voice will be ignored or silenced.’

And yet… throughout the entire ‘Reflection’ there is not a single reference to equality, celibacy, women in ministry, deacons, matrimony/marriage or divorce'.

What do you think?

AUSTRALIA'S PLENARY COUNCIL

It's worth noting that at the Australian Plenary Council on July 6th, a mild clause, Witnessing to the Equal Dignity of Women and Men, asking for women deacons to be accepted should the Vatican recommend them, was unexpectedly rejected by the voting bishops.

The shock in the hall was so palpable that 60 of the delegates, religious and laity alike, refused to take their seats when proceedings recommenced, and remained standing. News of the crisis quickly spread and was reported worldwide. It became apparent that the situation could not persist, and by 8th July agreement had been reached.

This is the first time, in our R&B memory, that a body of bishops has been so clearly challenged when it appeared to be disregarding the years of work and consultation that had gone into proceedings. According to eyewitnesses the shock in the hall could not fail to communicate itself to all concerned. The bishops heard. The bishops changed their position.

Root and Branch desire nothing more than to work with our bishops for a safe, a just and an inclusive church. We welcome this clear instance of a country's bishops likewise desiring to work with their people.

OTHER NEWS

We were delighted when the Pastoral Review asked us to write for them about our co-production with survivors, as the key to the future of the Church.

The Tyrant and the Child: Could co-production be the key to tackling clerical abuse? by Penelope Middelboe is in their July / August / September issue. It was then carried by La Croix, in their 5th July issue.

Look out for it on our website shortly!

... and now for a break
It used to be thought that drones were idle and unproductive members of the hive, but we now learn that they're sociable, visiting other hives, gathering important information, and relaying it back. Here a drone,
bottom left, huddles with three workers.

Root & Branch are taking a little time to huddle in August.
It's been a fabulous year since our Synod, in your company.
Our Core team are taking a short break to rest and reinvigorate -
we'll see you again in September.
