The Marvelous Trifecta of 4-H, the County Fair & the PNW Junior Livestock AuctionHooray, it’s finally fair season! The Clallam County Fair will run August 18th-21st. Let’s dig into the relationship between 4-H and County Fairs.
First a quick reminder, 4-H is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program delivered by Cooperative Extension—a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation. 4-H was founded 120 years ago to help support positive youth development while teaching the latest in agriculture and homesteading techniques to youth and families.
While 4-H has expanded beyond agriculture and homesteading, traditional project areas continue to be foundational and the fair is where the showcasing, competing and auctioning of all the hard work culminates! Interested in purchasing some tasty, locally-raised meat? Auction info here.
Read the Whole Article Here To become a 4-H volunteer, or learn more about you can support the 4-H program contact Melanie Greer at melanie.greer@wsu.edu Read: 4-H, County Fair & the PNW Junior Livestock Auction Gleaning Volunteers kicked off the season at River Run Farm gleaning lettuce, spinach and bok choy this last week of June. They harvested about 200 pounds, with five volunteers, in just about an hour. The gleaning crew made up of local gleaning enthusiasts were cutting and packing head lettuces such as green and red butterhead, loose spinach, plus heads of bok choy. All this produce will be delivered to the Sequim and Port Angeles Food Banks, community meals and Free Little Pantries. Thank you for all your good work! Keeping Kids Safe When You Have a Gun An estimated 4.6 million kids live with unlocked, loaded guns. Parents may not realize what a serious risk a gun in the home is, especially for children. Firearms are now the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens. And the reality is that having firearms in the home increases the risk of unintentional shootings, suicide and homicide. |

Medical Emergencies at School Children spend a big part of their day in school. Injuries can happen in or out of the classroom, and many kids also have medical conditions that may flare up and require urgent attention. Rani S. Gereige, MD, MPH, FAAP, and Toni Gross, MD, FAAP, describe how parents can work with their child’s pediatrician to prepare for these situations. |

The solar system and what exists beyond is a wonder to both kids and grown-ups! With the new, amazing photos from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, you and your child might be wondering more about space — and what we can and can’t see from Earth. To encourage conversations around space, try asking your child: “What does the sky look like in the day? How does it look different at night?” "How many planets are there? How many stars are there?" "What do you wonder about space? What questions do you have about space?"
Then together as a family, explore space with these resources from PBS KIDS! Lying |
Lying is a common behavior of 4-5 year olds. As a provider, you can reassure parents that lying, while frustrating, demonstrates critical thinking skills and comes from age-appropriate confusion between fantasy and reality. The following suggestions can help create a relaxed reaction and make children more likely to tell the truth: Acknowledge the feeling or wish that motivated the lie. State what you believe happened. Move on to a solution together.

It's never too early to teach your child how to save, and how to responsibly think about money and finances. One popular and effective way to do that is to provide an allowance, but it's also important to talk with your child about their allowance. Start at home with lessons on recognizing different forms of cash and coins, and saving their own money, before they move on to the best part - spending it! Check out our blog for six ways to instill in your child the value of money, and how to handle it responsibly Read more…. |

I switched to a new middle school as a tween. Before I even stepped foot in the building, my dad asked me my plan. “I want to be popular,” I told him. He laughed. But I was serious. I bought a curling iron. I begged my mom for lip gloss. Eventually, I got my ears double pierced and gave myself highlights. I joined clubs and greeted everyone in the halls with a nonchalant, “Hey, how are ya?” Somehow, it worked. I ended up with a big group of friends by the time I entered high school. It felt great fitting in—until I didn’t. In tenth grade, the girls in my group decided I no longer fit in. I don’t know who made the decision, but they all turned their backs on me, and suddenly, I was on the outside with a phone that no longer rang at night. I’d never wish ostracism on anyone, but during that difficult time, I learned a lot about myself. Here are 7 reasons fitting in is overrated and why it can actually be good for kids when they don’t.
