We’re delighted to announce this year’s programme!

We have over 100 events, in varied format, some indoors, some outdoors and some online.

You can hear about the origins of bere in Orkney fields, and the origins of potatoes on a high Bolivian plateau. There’s ship design for Neolithic seas and for polar icy waters today. There’s a new look at Orkney genes and patterns of human disease. And there’s a new field of engineering with the single remit: find a path to the future. There’s also a candlelight lecture, papermaking by the sea, and music for a winter queen.

We'll have two concerts in St Magnus Cathedral, with choral and instrumental music and stories. One goes back to the 17th century, the other to an astronomical life two centuries ago. We also have music of today and we meet a composer whose work is influenced by astronomy. There is music inspired by the sounds of renewable energy, and music from Shetland and Orkney linked to the sea, to accompany the story of salt fish and the cultural connections it inspired.

We hope to see you in Orkney, for stories of the past and explorations of the future, for shore walks and seaside workshops, with people from many places coming together to join us in an island setting.

All the best from the Festival!
