Farmers embrace social media to combat labour shortages
The COVID-19 pandemic found many farmers facing labour issues. Michelle Lawrence, of Janefield Dairy, was one of them. With traditional recruitment methods falling short, Michelle turned to social media to attract a different workforce – backpackers. Her message? One of opportunity.

Smart energy tech reduces emissions, costs for irrigators
Wilandra Farms, certified organic producers of milk, silage and hay, has partnered with Alternate Energy Innovations from Morwell, Victoria, to implement major changes to their power usage. Most recently, the team at Wilandra has invested in an Energy Management System (EMS) to reduce the use of conventional power for its irrigation and dairy processes.

Industry roundtable addresses input costs, shifting trade markets
While strong farmgate milk prices are encouraging, they aren’t the whole story, as the dairy sector contends with input costs, labour challenges and a fluctuating market. That’s the key out-take from a digital roundtable, with experts Janine Waller (ADPF), Brad White (Gippsland dairy farmer), Mark Billing (United Dairyfarmers of Victoria) and David Nation (Dairy Australia), hosted by The Weekly Times.

Bega acts on National Packaging Targets
As part of a sustainability roadmap to meet 50 per cent recycled content in all packaging by 2025, Bega undertook a feasibility study to test whether recycled content could be increased in their two and three-litre milk cartons. Cartons already included up to 20 per cent recycled resin, but it was unknown whether that could be increased safely. The study demonstrated a blend of new and recycled resin had comparable performance to virgin materials.
