San Carlos Weather Forecast

Monday night through early Tuesday was full of thunder, lightning, strong winds and a couple hours of rain. This week, we'll have partly cloudy skies. On Thursday, the daytime high will reach 39 C (102 F), then drop to 32 C (91 F) on the weekend. The night time temperatures will be 27 - 29 C (81 - 84 F). There's a small chance of rain nightly and an increased chance after midnight on Saturday through the beginning of next week. Daytime humidity will fall on Wednesday and stay below 50% through the week. During the weekend, the humidity will be above 60%.

Last week's area of low pressure turned into Hurricane Estelle. A ridge of high pressure over the southwestern U.S. moved Estelle west-northwest and away from us after she caused intense rains and landslides in Jalisco and Nayarit. Another broad area of low pressure is expected to form later this week a few hundred miles offshore of southern Mexico. Some gradual development is possible this weekend while the system moves generally west-northwestward.

Keep an eye on the weather at our San Carlos Weather page with satellite images and live weather feeds.

Fishing & Diving Reports

Fishing Report

It's still staying relatively cool on the water here in San Carlos. The seas are generally pretty mild and full of fish. I haven't heard of an offshore report, so I don't know.

I heard a couple rumors of small tuna. I would think that the bigger fish would be out there. Mainly the boats have been catching decent Dorado in close with a fair amount of small marlin and sailfish. I would think that the better bite would begin to move offshore.

One report of a larger marlin was spread. Better Dorado could be anywhere. A few big Sierra were reported. We still found a few smaller ones and Bonita. Maybe the current is too strong for bottomfishing. Good reports are all around the Sea of Cortez, so I think that fishing will remain strong throughout the year. If you're not afraid to sweat and can pick and choose your days, I think that this is as good as it will get.

Diving Report

Shore dives at Piedras Pintas (aka Lalo’s) always reveal something not seen very often or completely new. That was the case last week when José Luis, dive instructor at El Mar Diving Center, took some students on a training dive. The water temperature was a nice 85 degrees and visibility was variable due to some surge.

For the last few weeks, Pacific Seahorses (Hippocampus ingens) have been seen in the bay. Seahorses do not look like a fish, but they are.  They have fins, gills and a bony skeleton. Their prehensile tail helps them hold on to seaweed as they slurp in tiny prey from the water column. Seahorses can come in a variety of colors and most often blend into their surroundings. This species of seahorses is the largest, some reaching 12 inches.

José Luis also reported seeing a Longtail Stingray (Dasyatis longus), something that in all his years of diving this cove, he has never seen before. This stingray has a body that can be up to 3 feet long and a tail almost twice as long. It inhabits sand bottoms, as do other kinds of stingrays.

The more common fish-eels, grunts and wrasses and inverts - octopus, emerald green coral and murex are also fun to seek out on a shore dive. So, pick up a tank and get to the beach with your gear and do some exploring!

Pictured on the left are several of the pools available for you to enjoy in town.
