Many stitchers know Chottie's Plaid for its elegant construction and fun applications. If you don't know it, you can find some stunning examples by Chottie Anderson in Jo Ippolito Christensen's The Needlepoint Book .
Pretender's Plaid, on the other hand, is worked a little differently, but with a similar plaid-like effect. The most notable difference between the two is that this version will not create a reversable piece.
The basics:
Color 1 -- Choose a color and stitch 3-6 rows of continental as shown in the diagram above. This example is worked across grids of 6.
**For a mini plaid motif, end your first color with 3 rows (as shown in diagram). Otherwise, extend for three more rows, following the same pattern.**
Color 2: Continue stitching the same pattern for 1-2 rows in a contrast color. (Very pale or very dark will create the most dynamic plaid.)
Color 3: Fill in the stitches left open by the previous rows, and then stitch your next 3-6 rows in an opposite pattern.
Try it!
We used 4 strands of Planet Earth 6-ply silk for the greens and 2 strands of DMC floche for the cream. / Example was stitched on 18 ct canvas.
