Hello Happy Horse Riders,

Here's the latest news:
A reminder that I am traveling to study in the States at the end of September, which means you can't have lessons or workshops with me this Winter. Your last chance to learn is with the Clinics and Lessons that I am offering this summer. There are a few spots available, please check them out and sign up for the one that works for you and your horse. Amy Dorland Clinics    Also, the September 10-12 clinic subject has changed to Happy Horse, Health and Happiness Retreat and Celebration. Only 6 spots are available, details are lower in the newsletter.

Amy's July Thoughts: Horses don’t speak English and force is not a language. Horses respond to clear communication that they understand. If we want our horse to do something, it’s our responsibility to communicate in a way that makes sense to the horse, overriding our instincts to get impatient, frustrated or angry. Sometimes if we ask our horse to go from a trot to a canter and he doesn’t, we blame him for being disrespectful, willful or lazy - in fact, he is none of these. If he loves, trusts and respects us, he knows complying with our request is also in his best interest if we also learn to use and offer more softness, lighter cues and active neutral to create harmony in our partnership and tasks. Non-responsiveness can then be an indication that he doesn’t understand our cues or our way of communicating and clarity is required.

Sometimes if we have not been clear in our communication, our horse may do something other than what we requested but think he is doing what we asked for. Again, when this happens many riders think their horse is resisting and blame the horse. They become annoyed and see the horse as the problem. If however, the rider can then look inward as being the source of the problem, reconsider the quality of communication and make the appropriate change i.e. more increments, be lighter, release pressure faster, success and harmony can be achieved. Good leaders always strive to provide clear communication with the understanding that less is more and force (when danger is not a factor) has no place in excellent horse-human partnerships.

Here is part of my HHHL interview: HHHL asked Happy Horse Happy Life Instructors - How has Linda's new curriculum, "How To Talk Horse" changed or transformed your teaching, and what are the results you're seeing with your students? In this video snippet, we hear from Happy Horse Happy Life Instructor Amy Dorland. Click Here

I am still available to help with your Parelli Audition. I will video, coach, edit and send you a YouTube link, the cost is $100 per Savvy. Step #1, go to YouTube and search for Parelli Auditions that have passed for inspiration.

I will do virtual lessons with anyone who wants to send me a video, Cost is $25 for the first 10 minutes and $2 per minute after that. I will review your video and send back my thoughts to help you with any of your horsemanship struggles.

You can add my google calendar to your own by clicking on the 3 lines in the top left corner of your own google calendar and typing in my email in the "add a calendar" section. This works better on a computer than on a phone or tablet. Click Here to see my calendar

HHHL Updates
There are many differences between the HHHL program from the PNH program. One way that I explain this is that Parelli starts with Friendly Game to develop confidence in the horse whereas Linda's Happy Horse program has 3 levels of learning before confidence is focused on. The HHHL curriculum pathway is Connection, Relaxation, Response and then Confidence. By the time you get to the 4th module, confidence is more easily established in your horse.

A new HHHL Website is coming. It will still be on the Mighty Networks platform but the site will be customized to our group's specific needs. The launch date is TBA. Meanwhile, please contact me if you are having trouble navigating the excellent information. Also, the first module of the "How To Talk Horse" curriculum is now available to every member. This is the module on Connection and makes a huge difference in your interactions with your horse. The Parking Spot is powerful medicine for your horse's emotional fitness. Speaking about emotional fitness, I am 1/2 way through Kristy Smith and Linda's collaborative book on Emotional Fitness, it is excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a deeper connection and partnership with their horse.

Happy horse training - What do horses need? To bring out the best in a horse, we have to make sure their primary needs are met – mentally, emotionally, and physically. Obviously, they need water, shelter, proper feeding, and exercise; but what of their mental and emotional needs? This is where the biggest hurdles to ensuring a horse’s “happiness” exist. Until you know what is important to them, it is almost impossible to provide for their mental and emotional wellbeing. Horses need safety, comfort, and play, pretty much in that order and, it is our responsibility to provide that for them. For more details watch this video:  Click Here

Sugary Bits
Sugar did well on the mountain trip and her new muscles are supporting her body nicely. She is also looking forward to supporting students in Thunder Bay this winter when I am in South Carolina with Tyson.

Tyson's Tales
Tyson gave me a beautiful flying lead change when I was riding on the mountain trip at Karen's place. He was also very athletic when traveling downhill and decided to buck and kick at Sugar (who I was ponying).
Ponying is not Tyson's strongest skill, he likes to have his space to himself. We had many great times on this mountain trip.

Student Notices
Email your submissions for the newsletter before the 15th of each month to Amy  I love to hear your news and thoughts, pictures, what Parelli or Natural Horsemanship items you have for sale and Natural Horsemanship trained horses to sell.

From Brittany: Horse for sale, Dandy, 21 year old, one eyed QH gelding. Up to date on feet, teeth and deworming. Has had natural horsemanship training, is great to saddle, rides in a hackamore or halter. Has been a pasture horse for the last 5-10 years. Took him for a short trail ride last summer and he did great. Loves to hang out with my younger cousins so I’m thinking he may enjoy therapy or lessons at the right place. He would also be good for someone learning natural horsemanship. Does have some quirks that could potentially be worked on. I don’t have the time or attention to give him right now. $2500 OBO

True, it's not always easy to imagine places you've never been but dream of going; owning things you've never had but dream of having; and being the type of horse person you've never been but aspire to be.

Don't be afraid. You needn't slay the beast or scale the entire mountain. That's not how it's done. You only need to move your dream through each day.

Think of the distance you've already covered. Focus on your strengths. Let each new step remind you of your freedom. Let your every breath remind you of your power. Seek out friends and mentors; they're anxious to help.

You're not alone. You're understood. This road has been walked before. Dance life's dance, just a few steps at a time, and in the wink of an eye you will wonder to yourself, "What beast, what mountain? Was I having a dream?"

In case you were wondering, right now, in the unseen, all bets are on your continued inevitable success.

All's fair in love and dreams, especially yours.

Your Dreams are my Dreams!
