In summary, Russian Birch dieboard remains limited, expensive, and extremely delayed.
Limited
Another source of Russian Birch dieboard has been closed indefinitely. Either money can't reach the mills or the product can't reach the port (or get on a ship).
ExpensiveAnother source re-opened, but their pricing prevents us from ordering any…at least not until all other options are exhausted.
DelayedWe have…A…LOT…of Premium Russian Birch dieboard that was ordered LAST YEAR that still hasn’t arrived. Seriously…much of the material that was ordered in October through December of 2021 is still tied up in German ports. Some of our containers have been unloaded and loaded onto different ships FOUR TIMES…and they still haven’t yet started toward the United States. So it isn’t just the US ports that are congested…this is a world-wide problem.
OptionsThis doesn’t mean we’ve been idle…far from it. We have tested several different options that could replace or augment parts of our dieboard offering. However, much of the testing takes time…and money. For example, we’ve recently purchased samples (we must purchase them…there are no freebies) from multiple potential new suppliers. Some look promising while others are just problematic. Image above: One purchased sample with a laser-incompatible adhesive proved costly in time and money.
On top of that, we get treated to additional charges of $190 per day as various samples get stuck in customs while we navigate the mountains of paperwork. Yet, we’ll keep trying. We remain committed to supplying the industry with its needs.
Good NewsWe do have some new product on its way to us now. But we can’t yet provide any details. This new option, along with Poplar, are the most promising of the new options we’ve explored. As soon as it lands (expected to be next month…fingers crossed), you’ll hear about it via our next newsletter.
We are also monitoring...• Potential increases in drayage on the west coast (upwards of 40%!)
• More increases on maple (although nothing on Poplar, yet).
