Dear <<First Name>>,

carol darwinWe here at the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) are applying our best thinking toward a paradigm shift in health care that will better mitigate harmful social determinants of health (SDOH). I spoke about this exciting work at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Director's Lecture on SDOH on Tuesday, July 12, and invite you to listen to the attached recording.

As a school committed to preparing nurses to lead health care transformation and advance health and social equities, we are moving beyond just the characterization of inequities. To advance health and social equity, we must focus on mechanisms of SDOH influence, develop impactful nurse-led models of care, and bolster the science of resilience by strengthening the factors and conditions that enable individuals, families, and communities to thrive despite adversity.

After reviewing my full NINR presentation below, (my slide deck also is available on the school's website), I invite you to send me your thoughts.

The enduring inequities in our country that for too long have cost lives and wasted resources are a call to action. The nursing profession can and will answer that call to advance health equity, improve health outcomes, and optimize health care costs for all. We at DUSON are boldly claiming the mantle to advance new thinking and new actions to end health and social inequities. I hope you'll join us!

Sincerely,
