The Junk Drawer
We all have one. A drawer, cabinet, box, bench, table or corner where we put the things that don't fit anywhere else because we just might need them. It is fascinating what you find wen you start digging there. I have a set of cupboards in my garage. The top is like a bench which to my shame is strewn with all sorts. I have a plastic cover for plugs so I can safely use extension cords outside. I have never found the right place to store it. My box of face masks sits there, an empty plastic animal meat container that I must put into the recycling. The screws which I didn't need for the gate lock which I must put in the assorted screws in the cupboard. I am sure many of you resonate. They are put there until.
Since coming into my role as Secretary and looking across our membership records, I have found myself wondering if our church rolls are a little like my garage bench top. People come into the church and their name is put on the roll as they are accepted into membership. Some find a place and settle into ministry.. Some never quite find that place and just seem to sit on the bench. Others fall off the bench and are scattered, even gone never to be seen again.
With a membership of 11,420 in the Conference our best estimate, as we don't have full reporting, suggests only 6,000 would be in church on Sabbath. Is it time we looked at our church rolls and realise they have become the Junk Draws of baptisms past. I am sorry if that offends anyone but we need a clean up. Where are our people? Have we got a place for them, are they still with us? How might we reclaim them? This coming week how could you help us get our church rolls up to date? Will you as a church take an interest in who was and actually still is in your church and help us to keep our records straight? I pray that our church roll will be well organised like my cutlery drawer, we know exactly who is in church and how they are going.

Prayer Focus – Holy Spirit
I pray that the God who gives hope will fill you with much joy and peace while you trust in him. Then your hope will overflow by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
The 15th Chapter of Romans asks God’s people to have patience with, encouragement for and acceptance of others – just as Jesus had with us. It’s a hard ask, but Paul says God will give it to us and the Holy Spirit will then overflow our hearts with hope. We live in times where hope is needed. Today, pray for these 3 virtues.
Dear God, just as your son had patience, gave encouragement and showed acceptance, please give us these virtues also, that we might show your glory to our families, friends and neighbours. Amen
