How Technology is Meeting the Changing Needs of the Home Healthcare Worker

Over the past two years, the need for social distancing brought more patient care into the home. A March 2022 survey found that 76% of people who have had a telehealth visit since July 2021 would prefer telehealth visits in the future. Physicians are in favor of the trend as well, with 75% saying that telehealth has allowed them to deliver high-quality care and more than 70% feeling motivated to increase telehealth use. Studies suggest that in-home care results in better patient outcomes and costs up to 30% less to provide than in-person care.

Surgical Dressing Helps Kill Melanoma, Regenerate Healthy Cells

Scientists at the University of Nottingham in the UK have created a surgical dressing that is specifically designed to facilitate and enhance photothermal therapy following melanoma resection. The dressing allows for near-infrared photothermal therapy that lasts just 15 seconds every 48 hours. The concept involves killing any remaining melanoma cells, while encouraging healthy cells to regenerate within the resection site.

Artificial Muscles are Stronger and More Flexible than Real Muscle

Engineers at the University of California Los Angeles created artificial muscles that are stronger and more flexible than the real thing. The new material is an example of a dielectric elastomer, which is an electroactive polymer that can change its shape or size when stimulated using electricity. Each film of the new material is only as thick as a human hair, but the researchers layer them up to form mini muscles. The technology could be very useful in robotic prostheses, medical soft robots, and wearable devices.

Israeli Telemedicine Changes Lives of Palestinian Women in West Bank

Holographic Patients are Now Helping to Train the Next Generation of Doctors

Future doctors at a hospital in the United Kingdom have become the first in the world to train with holographic patients. Wearing mixed-reality headsets, students can treat virtual patients using technology that mimics medical situations. Researchers at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge developed the pioneering technology. During the simulation, medical students encounter a virtual patient with symptoms – such as being asthmatic – and must make real-time decisions about their care.
