In and Around Adelphi Meeting

And for the Children ...

Children's Summer Program -  On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month (and 5th Sunday, if there is one), children of grade-school age have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises.  Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave for their program with their adult leaders. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.

Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children in grades 1- 5 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Finding a New (AFM) White House Resident

Adelphi's current White House resident (Joseph Ndayisenga) is planning to move out as of Oct. 1.  Our Resident Search Committee is re-convening to select our next resident. Would you be interested in serving? If you have questions about serving on the committee, or would be willing to serve please contact (via Breeze) either Heather Carter or Victor Thuronyi (clerk of trustees, the committee in charge of the process).

If you are interested in the position, or know someone who might be a good fit, please contact Heather or Victor. A job description and application process will be available shortly.

What Happened in our July Meeting for Business?

Here are the draft minutes of the meeting last Sunday, in case you had to miss it. Please send any corrections to recordingclerk@adelphifriends.org.

The Wider World of Quakers

Friends Journal Feature

Friend Journal features an article on confronting people who make a meeting unsafe. "To say, out loud, things that are close to our soul makes us vulnerable.… If we don’t speak because we don’t feel safe enough to share what the Spirit calls us to say, Quakerism falls apart." In this article from Friends Journal's March issue, Donald W. McCormick considers how meetings can address threats to communal security.

Newcomers from Arizona and Texas

Texas and Arizona have decided to "forward to DC" all of the people that they apprehend for crossing the border without proper papers.  So busloads of people are arriving by bus in D.C. with nowhere to go and no way to get there.

Friends Meeting of Washington is participating in a local network of faith groups and others to meet the new arrivals at the bus station and take them for a hot meal and some conversation about next steps.

In Montgomery County, the Faith Community Advisory Council is convening an urgent townhall event on Thursday, July 21st, to see how we can connect with other networks to respond to this influx of newcomers.  Here is a flyer about the meeting, and here is a link to register in advance for the meeting.

Couch Potato Activists' Alert

The July alert for Couch Potato Activists is available here.  As usual, the range of action opportunities is wide, including several earth and water protecting events, couch-potato support needed for a Truth and Reconciliation bill in Congress, education on reproductive rights, support for trans people in hostile states, and direct help requested by Housing Initiative Partnership (HIP).

"The old ladies say if you love the Lord your God with your whole heart, [with] your whole soul and your whole mind and all your strength, then you praise the Lord with your whole heart and soul and mind and strength and you don’t bring [God] any feeble service.”
