Artrepreneur Spotlight

Marcia Morse Mullins • Fiber Artist | Basketmaker

Marcia Morse Mullins is a fiber artist and basketmaker who has gathered, manipulated, and woven natural materials for more than 40 years. Her preferred medium is black ash splint, which she prepares by hand according to the teachings of a Potawatomi elder who passed tribal traditions to her in the 1980s.
Marcia sees creativity as an extension of her botany degree. Since most natural materials have to be manipulated before weaving, it helps knowing how they are "put together" in the first place. Ash and oak trees grow in layers under the bark so their growth rings can be separated.  Bark slips easily from vines and trees; fibers can be extracted from leaves and stems. "It’s all a matter of knowing the characteristics of the individual plant," Marcia notes.
Her work has been featured across North America in art galleries, juried exhibitions, books, documentaries, and a larger-than-life ArtPop billboard. She presented a seminar on split woven basketry at the Epcot International Festival of the Arts and manipulated living vines into a temporal collection of weavings for Polk County’s inaugural Art in the Park installation. Her signature woven antler sculptures are in numerous private collections.
