Camden acts to protect local shops, Kenwood events, The Bank restoration and upcoming events

August 2022

Camden acts to protect local shops
Camden Council has put in place arrangements to protect the integrity and critical mass of local shopping centres by limiting the conversion of shops to housing - shops converted to housing typically offer poor quality accommodation. Camden have done so by confirming the Article 4 Direction (effective from 29 July 2022) to remove permitted development rights for change of use of Commercial, Business or Service (Class E) to a dwelling house (Class C3) unless planning permission is granted by the council : https://www.camden.gov.uk/article-4-directions-land-use-classes. This currently applies only to the Camden side of the High Street. Our Planning Group are trying to persuade Haringey to do likewise.
Licenses for Kenwood events
The Camden Licensing Panel has approved plans by English Heritage for changes to their licence for events at Kenwood. In doing so the panel overrode objections from the Heath and Hampstead Society and the Highgate Society (see here). The new licence will allow up to eight events of more than 10,000 people and no restrictions on numbers of events for less than 10,000 people. For more details see this article in the Hampstead and Highgate Express.
Planned repairs to The Bank, Highgate Hill

Haringey Council has announced plans to repair the Grade II listed retaining wall of the raised roadway outside Channing Senior School. For more details click here.

Camden licensing applications
Councils are not required to notify residents about nearby licensing applications - this differs from requirements for planning applications where neighbours are required to be notified. We have been campaigning for changes as licences can have a significant impact for residents nearby. Camden have put in place an email notification service. To find out how you can register to receive email notifications about licence applications nearby click here
More bus route changes proposed
Transport for London is consulting on more bus route changes, some of which will affect Highgate. The proposals affect routes 4, 88, 214 and 24. For full details of the proposals, the Society's response and how to comment click here. The consultation period has been extended to August 7th.
