Toronto City Council is planning to increase taxes on new housing by 46% at the worst possible time. With rising interest rates and construction costs, 5,000 new homes could be cancelled - and that’s before this planned tax hike. The CMHC says we need to build 2.6 million homes by 2030 to restore housing affordability. Increasing development charges will only make it harder to achieve this goal.

Under the proposed changes, development charges will have tripled since 2018, even though they have already increased 600% since 2009. Meanwhile, average property taxes have barely budged.

We need your help to push back on this prohibitive development charge increase at the July 12 Executive Committee meeting.

Send an email to the executive committee: individual voices and emails are crucial to effect change in City Hall. To make it easy, we’ve provided a sample email below!

Gentle density, missing middle, and small developer-led projects are the kind of housing City Council says they want, but they are also the most likely to be cancelled because of this development charge increase. It is not enough to legalize housing through zoning reform. We also need to ensure that building housing remains economically feasible.

Thank you for your support,
