The Discipleship Project Launches

A new course is set to help encourage people explore what lay ministry they may be being called to across Cumbria.

The Discipleship Project is an ecumenical course and will begin in September, with six core sessions to be run over a year from the Diocese of Carlisle’s Church House offices in Penrith and other supplementary modules to be run across the county.

It aims to support those people who want to explore what ministry they may be being called to, in or outside of a church context.

The Rev Nicky Smith, Director of Ministry Development for the Diocese of Carlisle and who has developed the course, explained: “What we’re offering is something that’s really exciting; it’s the chance for churches, parishes and mission communities to draw alongside the course to help people explore their calling.

“This is about blessing those people who take part in the course so that, in turn, they can then bless the churches and communities they serve in new ways.”

    A Special Prayer For Ordinands

Please do use this special prayer for all our ordinands and their families in the year ahead.

Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer God,
who you call your faithful people into a life of service,
help us to nurture and hold in love
all those who are ordained at this time in the life of your Church.
Teach us your ways,
that we might recognise your Mission in the world,
your compassion in caring for others,
and your love deep within every human heart.
We ask this in your Holy Name,
as one undivided Trinity of love,
now and for evermore. Amen

Epic Cycle Ride For Church Organ
A west Cumbrian church organist has completed a marathon 3,800-mile cycle ride raising thousands of pounds towards the restoration of the historic instrument he plays.

On Monday (4 July) John Corran pedalled back to his home church of St Paul’s Irton, near Gosforth, having criss-crossed England, cycling to every St Paul’s church in the country.

In 2019 retired headteacher John, 69, came up with the idea to visit the churches to raise funds for the restoration of the Grade II listed, 147-year-old organ which he plays at Irton.

He said: “In 2018 we had a thorough survey completed of the organ to establish what work needed to be done. Those in the know in the organ world say it’s a fantastic instrument and one which is very much worth keeping."

Contactless Giving - Helpful Tips
In the last of three films about the Diocese of Carlisle's national pilot for contactless giving, we hear how churches developed best practice to encourage donations.

Dr Chris Angus, the treasurer and a churchwarden at Lanercost Priory, provides tips on where best to locate a contactless unit and who may be best expected to donate.

Lanercost Priory raised £4,623 over 12 months, the highest total of any Cumbrian church on the pilot scheme.

 Bishop's Harvest Appeal Fundraiser

Two Cumbrian Mothers’ Union members have kicked off a 300-mile fundraising cycle ride to benefit the Bishop of Carlisle’s Harvest appeal.

Retired hospital consultant Deb Lee - who was appointed the MU’s Cumbrian President earlier this year - has taken to the saddle alongside Action and Outreach Co-ordinator Daphne Sisson.

They plan to visit every church in Cumbria which has an MU branch and on Wednesday (6 July), set off from Lanercost Priory on the first of 10 legs which will take in Carlisle Cathedral, three priories and 48 churches.

Each route will average about 30 miles with Deb and Daphne also being photographed outside each of the parish churches. They plan to finish at Cartmel Priory on 30 July.

Deb explained: “The purpose of the ride is two-fold. Firstly, we want to raise both money for and awareness of the Bishop’s Harvest Appeal and, secondly, I want to meet as many members as possible."
