The Government of the Town of New Market: A Brief Synopsis by Pamela A. Hile, Editor.

Highlights from the Truban Archives

On December 14, 1996 the Town of New Market celebrated the bicentennial of its establishment by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia. This booklet was part of the effort to celebrate that milestone.

The book contains excerpts from the records of the Town Trustees (later Council) and from the Commonwealth of Virginia. These excerpts were recorded by Francis J. Bezdek, Brad Corcoran, and Jessica McClain under the oversight of Pamela A. Hile who edited and compiled the volume.

Early town records contain information about how the government functioned, but also about the community as a whole. Residents priorities, events, needs, and much more was discussed at council meetings and acted upon by local government officials. In a time before zoning, VDOT, Federal regulations, and other modern government local towns were responsible for everything from paving the streets to fire protection to organizing community blood drives.

You can learn more about the Town of New Market, its government, and the community it served by visiting the Shenandoah County Library’s Truban Archives. Open Monday-Friday 10-5:00PM and Saturdays 10-3:00PM. Appointments are recommended.
