ANUAFC Griffin Tale

Round 13

Something is brewing in South Coast this weekend. It’s gonna hot, it’s gonna be heavy. It’s the Griffins going coastal to take on the Hawks in 3 tantalising matchups that will shape the finals race for the whole competition. Check our immense athletes named to take this challenge up.

The Marsupials from Yass

By Alex Bulley

Firstly, I would like to thank Al Thorne for giving me the opportunity to write the Griff Tale for this week, it is a great honour. Initially I didn’t really know what I was putting my hand up for when asked, but alas, here we are.

It was a gloomy middle of winter Canberra day with a fair bit of moisture underfoot. Yet what was to come was the opportunity for the Ressies to stamp their position in the comp as a contender by taking down the mob of Roos from Yass. I think it would be quite the sight if a Kangaroo took on an actual Griffin, interesting to see how such battle would pan out. I digress.

Unlike regular home games at South, the Buzz were not kicking off proceedings for the day. Instead, they were putting in the hard yards from what seemed to be as a crash course of physical endurance.

A precursor for what was to come…

Quite a few were in their first game back after a hiatus and were hoping to impress, causing a selection headache for coach’s AMH and J Kelly.

Right from the first centre bounce, the follow-up efforts from Lach Smith in the ruck were immense. You could easily have been mistaken for the great Shane ‘Sausage’ Mumford making an appearance with the shear amount of ‘bigman’ weight being thrown about.

There it was. The tone was set.

Setting the tone early, we were off to a great start, matching the mob in the contest and as the first quarter played out, we put the foot down even more. None of these soft half-arse almost touches. Proper hard contested footy. Going full Libba. And to be fair, at times I thought I was partaking in a simulation of such ferocious tackling pressure observed in the 2012 AFL Grand Final. Tim Robba hitting the scoreboard first for the Griff’s, nursing one through.

Through the middle Connor and Bushy were hustling all afternoon, I don’t know what either of them had for breakfast that morning (of course I didn’t) but clearly something with enough nutritional value to turn it on when it mattered. Toby as well, fresh off his gig from the front lawns of Old Parliament House was in the mood for football.

Crawsh and Scotto were pillars down in the defence, taking intercept marks and reading the flight of the footy like a children’s book (I hope that simile did justice, this is the first time I’ve attempted creative writing since Year 12).

On a more personal note, I would like to thank Robba and Skronk for their cordial and diplomatic conversations with the goal umpire in the second quarter to make sure that my uncharacteristic Mason Cox roost made it over the line clear of any touch from the Yass back six. A wheat-based carbonated beverage of their choice I promise will be coming their way.

Although the scoreboard would suggest a comprehensive performance from the Marsupials of Yass, if there was a scoreboard for intensity and effort, the match would have been considered an all-time classic. The pressure didn’t drop and all those Ressies from the weekend can hold their heads up high.

Seniors Griff Tale

By Sammy Crutch

The Griffos took on Coota in a classic south oval derby last Saturday. The weather was a bit grim, but the boys were on.

Highlights included Jack Hadley’s 4 goals, Kiz and Darcy’s ruck domination, Gov’s absolute domination inside the middle of the park - never seen a Jackman move like that in the centre circle, and mounty’s absence - how about those bombers though. As per usual the defence stood strong and their communication - probs stemming from the absolutely sizzling back 6 group chat - allowed them to work nearly every situation out.

Huge thanks to AMH and Scotto for doubling up and getting a couple of games under the belt. Couldn’t have done it without you xxx
