I am writing to you on behalf of Bellona Europa, an environmental NGO working on a broad portfolio of climate solutions, with a focus on tackling the challenge of decarbonising so-called ‘harder-to-abate’ sectors, such as heavy industry.
We are reaching out to you considering the upcoming discussions for the compromise amendments for the EU Directive on gas markets and hydrogen and the report tabled by MEP Geier. In the report, we found there to be two key amendments that we think could use your support, given it’s the fact that they provide significant climate benefits, shield consumers from increasing energy prices and decrease dependency on imported fossil fuels. We summarise them below and have attached our brief for a more detailed look.
Amendment 38:Defining low carbon gases to reflect their full climate impact.
It provides industry with a clear legal framework to scale up the production of low carbon gases that will significantly reduce emissions.
Amendment 55:Ensuring the targeted use of climate friendly molecules.
It ensures a high purity of hydrogen and by targeting its use ensures that the EU utilises a valuable resource in the most efficient way possible. To this email, we also attached another short briefing highlighting multiple reasons why blending hydrogen in natural gas pipelines would be detrimental to the climate, consumers and European energy security.
We hope to count on your support on these two key amendments and are readily available to further discuss these in a meeting or contribute with other amendment proposals.
Best regards, Aravind Dhakshinamoorthy
