ABOUT EXPO 2022

This “must-attend” virtual event is an attendee’s opportunity to see unique use-inspired research solutions funded by the NSF Convergence Accelerator. Last year’s event drew over 2,000 registrants from academia, industry, nonprofit, and government across dozens of countries—and this year’s event is expected to be even larger.

During the event, you will have the opportunity to connect with our research team and to see live solution presentations from us as well as over 45 other solutions focused on six convergent research track topics, as well as network with other researchers, innovators, and business and technical practitioners from a wide range of sectors.

Featured Research Track Topics

  • AI-Driven Data Sharing & Modeling
  • AI & the Future of Work
  • Open Knowledge Networks
  • Quantum Technology
  • The Networked Blue Economy
  • Trust & Authenticity in Communication Systems

About Backyard Buoys

Backyard Buoys empowers Indigenous and other coastal communities to collect and use ocean data to support their blue economy: maritime activities, food security, and coastal hazard protection. Innovations include a sustainable process for community-led stewardship of affordable ocean buoys and a web-based application that renders data easy to understand and bridges to Indigenous knowledge.

We have a geographically, academically, institutionally, and culturally diverse groups of partners collaborating on the Backyard Buoys project. Our partnership includes 1) three U.S. IOOS Regional Associations; 2) Indigenous partners in each region; 3) a proven ocean float  developer; as well as new educational partners.
  • Pacific Northwest: Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS), Quileute Tribe, Quinault Indian Nation, Western Washington University
  • Alaska: Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS), Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program
  • Pacific Islands: Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS), Marshall Islands Conservation Society, National Park of American Samoa, Hawaiʻi Sea Grant,  Conservation International Hawaiʻi
  • Sofar Ocean Technologies (Sofar)

Our booth number is E13! Our booth times are 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm EDT on July 27, 2022 and 11:00 am, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm EDT on July 28, 2022.

About the NSF Convergence Accelerator

Today’s national-scale societal challenges cannot be solved by one discipline working alone. Instead, multiple disciplines must work together. To deliver tangible solutions that have a nation-wide societal impact and at a faster pace, the NSF Convergence Accelerator leverages a convergence approach to transition basic research and discovery into practice. Using innovation processes like human-centered design, user discovery, and team science; and integration of a multidisciplinary approach, NSF is making investments to solve high-impact societal challenges through use-inspired convergence research. The Convergence Accelerator is a program aligned to the newly formed Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships.
