Our Last Meeting
A "saltcellar" was the object of the demonstration last month given by Stuart Shanker.
Stuart started out by explaining what a saltcellar is and how it is used. A saltcellar is a box like container that is used for containing, (take a guess), 'salt'. It is used either during the cooking of food or at the table during the consumption of food. They can be any size or shape but commonly have a flattish top that swivels on a dowel for a hinge and held closed by a pair of magnets.
After the explanation, Stuart started with a cylinder with tenons on each end like you'd turn a box. He parted off what will become the top and set that aside and focused on the bottom portion.
Stuart first laid out the wall thickness of 1/2 an inch to allow thickness for the 1/4 inch dowel and magnet holes that will be drilled later and began hollowing out the bottom leaving the bottom corner curved to allow easy access in retrieving the salt.
After the hollowing he finish turned the bottom.
Then after locating the positions of the holes for the dowel hinge and magnet latch he drilled the holes.
Then he began finish turning the top which has a flat inside and any shape or embellished top you desire.
Thank you, Stuart, for sharing your expertise and an interesting craft and gift item with us.
