"First" Friday Film Discussion This Evening

Watch the film ahead of time, if you can.  Plot summary:  Trans boy Joe's troubled but well-intentioned father, Troy, takes off with him into the Montana wilderness, pursued by police, after his wife, Sally, from whom he has recently separated, refuses to let Joe live as his authentic self. See the trailer here. The film is available on Kanopy and Hoopla for free, and other streaming services for a nominal fee. 

Poem as Portal

Saturday, July 9 from 10-noon on Zoom

Friends take a single poem where they need it to go, and from that new perspective discover what had been hidden.  Join thoughtful, respectful seekers in new explorations, and share in the harvest.  If you are not already on Judith Goedeke’s monthly mailing list, contact her through Breeze to receive this month's poem, queries, quotes and Zoom link.  Everyone joining in should bring a journal or other materials to use during time for quiet reflection.  You are warmly invited.

Meeting's Business

Meeting for Business is coming up this Sunday.  The agenda, draft minutes from June, financial reports, the proposed Pastoral Confidentiality policy, and other documents you will need for the meeting are (or will be) available here for your reference. 

And for the Children ...

Children's Summer Program -  On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month, children of grade-school age will have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises.  Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave with their adult leaders for their program. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.

Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children in grades 1- 5 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house. 

Baltimore Yearly Meeting Sessions

BYM Annual Sessions will be held on line and in person, August 1 - 9 at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Hood College now requires advance registration for anyone who will be on campus, so if you are planning to attend in person you must register by July 15.  One week. Seven days. Just sayin'.

The Peace Testimony and the Ukraine War:
A Webinar for Friends

The BYM Working Group on U.S. Militarism and War brings us an excellent panel to talk about how the peace testimony leads us in considering the war in Ukraine. The panel includes Helena Cobban, Bob Dockhorn, and Michael Beer, all of whom have deep experience, not just with the peace testimony, but specifically with Ukraine and Russia. Climate Refugees - Reel and Meal

Monday, July 18, 2022, 7:00 pm

The evening's discussion will follow two films about climate refugees: 
(1) “Fleeing Climate Change,” focusing on Indonesians, who must abandon their homes because of flooding and Cameroonians whose arable land has become a desert, where crops do not grow, and (2) “The Expanding Desert” which shows the devastation caused by the decision to cut down trees during the Ceausescu era in Romania.  The films will be screened live at the New Deal Café, 113 Centerway in Greenbelt, July 18, 7 p.m. and via zoom.   Zoom registration is required.

First Step Towards Right Relationship with the Land and its Peoples 

On August 9 and 11, from 7:30 - 9 pm Eastern time, Pendle Hill is sponsoring a two-part webinar on the topic of the land we live on, where it came from, how to acknowledge the truth of it and, perhaps, where to go from here. Find out more and register here. 

Truth and Healing Commission
on Boarding School Policies for Indigenous Children  

Both the Senate and the House are taking action to move along the bills that would create a Commission that would listen to Indigenous survivors of the boarding school era and examine the federal government's responsibility for the truth of that part of history, and the healing that is still needed now. The House Committee on Natural resources (subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples) held hearings in May and the full committee passed the bill in June. The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has held a hearing and is now soliciting further written testimonies from survivors. The list of co-sponsors is growing, but still does not in include Maryland or Virginia Senators or Representatives, other than Rep. Raskin. DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton was an early co-sponsor of the House bill.
