Summer has arrived! You may be spending more time outdoors and noticing things around you like the beautiful quail families scooting around with a dozen chicks, or maybe you notice water in a creek that you thought would be dry this month. Did you know that this information is actually really helpful to conservation researchers as they look for solutions to issues like biodiversity loss and climate change?

Meet Our Staff Conservationist
Alina Nuebel
|
|
Conservationist and Artist Alina Nuebel is passionate about supporting native pollinators. For Conservation Works, Alina designs memorable and unique participant experiences by fusing scientific knowledge with the creative arts. When not plotting new ways to engage the public's interest in pollination ecology, learning about grasslands, or planting habitat gardens, Alina paints murals and operates an art studio in Santa Rosa.
This coming year, Alina will provide art lessons combined with outdoor watershed science education to engage youth living in SW Santa Rosa with their local streams, then paint micromurals illustrating local habitat. Read about our recent Kids Creek Care activities in SW Santa Rosa in our article below.

Kids Creek Care Engages Youth and Community in Action and Science

Conservation Works had a great year protecting Colgan and Roseland Creeks with the help of Elsie Allen and Roseland University Prep High School students! Check out this video from our 2021 cohort to hear directly from local youth why caring and advocating for local creeks matter! Creek Care Youth Action Group video.
Our 2021 Kids Creek Care program launched during “Creek Week” bringing families and neighbors together to clean over two miles of Colgan Creek, picking up thirty-nine pounds of trash the very first day we were together! Take-action activities continued over the year as students formed a Youth Action Group gathering together several Saturday afternoons over the school year to pick up garbage, remove invasive plant species, plant trees and native grasses, conduct water quality tests, plant and wildlife assessments, and learn all about conservation careers and environmental advocacy. This program will continue each year as we provide opportunities for youth to get involved in protecting and connecting to creeks in the watershed where they live.
Our 2021-2022 Kids Creek Care program was made possible by the generous grant from the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment and support from the City of Santa Rosa and Sonoma Water Creek Stewardship Program. Stay tuned as this project continues in the 2022-2023 school year with a Micro Mural project, made possible by the Joseph & Vera Long Foundation, Contact Katharine Gabor for more information katharine@conservationworksnc.org
