We are glad to publish news of events at posts throughout Suffolk County and any other events informing our members and other veterans.
Putting a flyer on a Facebook page is will not reach many of your fellow veterans. A recent article, after the fact, appearing in Newsday describing the interment of a homeless veteran at Calverton National Cemetery is an example. If we had received the details of this event in advance, perhaps many more Legionnaires and other veterans might have been able to participate.
Your "News You Can Use" is sent to almost 400 Suffolk County Legionnaires on Wednesday (sometimes Thursday) each week. For very special events and where time is of the essence, we are happy to send out a special edition on any day of the week.

Welcome to July! The beautiful month in which we celebrate our Nations Independence.
Also the month the American Legion starts it’s membership year.
Please remind everybody, as we start our 2023 membership year, we are still running parallel with our 2022 year.
First we need to continue to bring back those expired members.
Do Not give up on them, nor write them off as lost.
Continue with Buddy Checks!
If Posts are having outings this summer, ask them to reach out to the expired members to come down an enjoy.
At the same time they can get them back into good standings with the American Legion.
Maybe they’ll remember why they joined.
Secondly, Now is the time to submit as many new members as you can for 2023.
We all had a rough couple of years. God only knows we have lost some good members to post everlasting. We need to bring in as many and more than what we have unfortunately lost.
People are getting out again. Grab a handful of membership applications. Put them in the glovebox. Picnics, car shows, carnivals, beaches, gun shows, fishing expos, race tracks. Veterans are all over.
Over 700,000 veterans in NY alone.

2023 Membership Cards
Suffolk County Adjutant Jim Beecher is in contact with officials at the Department of New York. and asked at the State Convention as to where they were and was told there were paper shortages.
They will be mailed by National directly to the county commanders. We will advise when we learn where the membership cards are and when posts can expect to receive them. Please inform your members of this unfortunate delay.

SailAhead and the Centerport Yacht Club Partner for the sixth year for a Veterans’ Sailing day!
This year SailAhead will be having their 6th Annual Take a Veteran Sailing Event at Centerport Yacht Club!
Over the last two years, COVID-19 has prevented us from getting veterans out on the water at-scale. This year we are resuming our sailing programs.
The event date this year is Sunday, July 31st.
We will be honoring SPC Ryan James Day, an Army Ranger from the 2nd Battalion, 75th Army Regiment (along with all Our Mates). Ryan died by suicide at 21 years old, on December 15, 2014.
The day’s schedule is tentative, but will look something like this: 12:00 PM: Veterans and Guest arrive at Centerport YC for sign in.
12:00 – 1:00 PM: Ceremony will commence when guests and veterans are signed in. We will board the boats immediately after the ceremony.
5:00 – 5:30 PM: Weather depending, we head back to the docks where a BBQ and live music will be waiting for us.
7:00 PM: Event ends.

Email Impersonation Attacks
Whether you are NHQ staff or a volunteer of the American Legion be aware that threat actors are always looking for ways to compromise your work or personal email accounts. The American Legion is purposefully an open organization both in its public relations and veterans’ assistance programs. All post, department, and national positions who communicate electronically are at risk of being targeted. Sometimes those attacks come from already compromised email accounts. The message you receive may look very real at first look.
**BEFORE you take action on a request, be certain the email you received was authored by the apparent the sender. If the message looks somewhat wrong, feels not quite right, or asks for something out of character, verify it with the sender.
What we have seen:

Threat actors or scammers, will attempt to push the recipient to buy gift cards and send the account numbers for the cards over email or SMS (texting) Often the scammer will ask you to send them a text so they can move to a different communication channel. We have also had scammers text first and then move to email.

This ruse is used most often to dupe the recipient into logging into a fake site. This may be an email host site (Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) or Office 365 depending on what the threat actor knows about the recipient. Once you have logged into this fake site you find there is a junk document. The bad guy now has your account credentials and will be harvesting your messages and contacts and sending out further scams from your mailbox.
If you are in doubt of a message’s validity when the sending address is a known value, try contacting the requestor outside of the email address they use to send. A phone conversation can be the best method to uncover attacks that are in play.
At NHQ we have implemented security measures that alert us immediately when a staff account has been compromised. We have also added multi-factor authentication that prevents a threat actor from logging in even if they have “learned” a user’s password.
We recommend that you set up multifactor authentication for your personal email, financial, and other online accounts containing personal data.

Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program
The purpose of the Veterans Peer-to-Peer Program is to help our veterans resolve their problems by giving them a place to go for that help. To understand how our program works is simply demonstrated and explained in the following illustration. The veteran takes a glass of water (which represents stress) in his/her hand, and while standing up, holds it out straight in front. The longer it’s held, the heavier the stress gets. A veteran peer comes along beside the veteran holding the glass, and seeing the stress, the veteran peer makes the veteran comfortable by helping him/her to sit down in a chair. This also lowers the height of the outstretched arm holding the glass, making it easier for the peer to hold the arm with the glass and reduce the stress. However, there is still stress. Then along comes a clergy who takes the glass of water (stress) away. Thus, the stress is relieved.
