Celebrating Uncertainty
July 8, 2022

First, From the Heart

Most of us are just starting to recognize the wobbly terrain underfoot as our new normal. While ancient wisdom traditions have long recognized the impermanence of all things, this profound reality is slowly taking hold for effective leadership in a changed world.

Compassion is at the heart of how leaders can transcend the challenges of our time. The Lancet just published an important article authored by our Board Advisors Liz Grant and David Addiss, along with our compassionate colleague Heather Buesseler, and Corinne Reid. In their proposed compassion-in-action framework, they invite leaders to emphasize “human-centredness and sustained, courageous decision-making that challenges inequities.”

Let’s recognize the power of working with, instead of against, uncertainty. Understandably you may find yourself uncomfortable, vulnerable, humbled, or even fearful of what is emerging before your eyes. And sometimes you may find yourself energized and curious about how the possibilities for your life and leadership are unfolding. Open your heart to its wisdom and guidance. Your compassionate voice resides within.

With love,
Laura

Leading Through Uncertainty

Taking action in the face of uncertainty is scary. As uncertainty and complexity increase, our deepest survival instincts become set off even more. These pressures are particularly pronounced for leaders. Leaders need to sort out matters in their own life and they have teams turning to them for answers. These uncertain times are a chance for leaders to rise by anchoring with equanimity, leading with transparency, and responding to the world pragmatically. Read more.

A compassion narrative for the sustainable development goals: conscious and connected action
by Liz Grant, Corinne Reid, Heather Buesseler, David Addiss
in The Lancet, July 02, 2022

In 2015, all UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. While we are halfway between 2015 and 2030, we are far short of halfway to achieving the goals. Writing in The Lancet, CFCL Advisory Board members Liz Grant and David Addiss, our compassionate colleague Heather Buesseler, and Corinne Reid offer a framework for compassion-in-action to radically reposition values as the drivers of the Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals. Read the research.

"As we enter an age of uncertainty, firms are desperately searching for the tools to keep pace. The problem is that most of our existing frameworks, developed during a more stable era, don’t work as well in dynamic conditions." Read more.

Upcoming Event

The Embody Lab One-Day Summit: Healing Intergenerational Trauma with Dr. Teresa Lau, Euphrasia “Efu” Nyaki, Magogodi Makhene, Dr. Ruby Gibson, and Nir Esterman
Sunday, July 17 from 9:00am-5:15pm (free online event)

What if suffering is rooted in trauma our ancestors experienced decades, or even centuries, in the past? What if the traumas and triumphs from generations past are stored in our bodies and our brains, and live on in our collective narratives and the very fabric of our beings? In this transformative One-Day Summit we will explore these questions and seek to connect to these experiences in our bodies in order to break or shift these intergenerational cycles. We’ll discover how to connect to our ancestors’ suffering with healing reverence but also how to find authentic freedom through reclaiming our destinies. Find out more and register.

Practice Matters

What Next

I calculate, plan, process, and predict so that my next action has the intended response. I follow the rules. I cast a net of possibilities far and wide to anticipate the outcome I seek.

Ha! If only I had a clue about what would happen next. Seems like this is a newly familiar way of being in these recent times. Did I really know anything more before? Or did I live with the illusion of control and certainty?

Now is the only moment to experience, and then open to the next, and next. My anticipation and expectation only get in the way, creating resistance and suffering. I am learning to allow and welcome whatever comes next – be it unexpected, difficult, or joyful. Such is the flow of all life.

When can we practice? Always!
