Dear <<First Name>>,

As mentioned in our last newsletter,  we have been working really hard to a) counter the false narrative being put out by the LLPT and b) preparing for both the Judicial Review Process and the Supreme Court of Appeal hearing. In this letter you will find some great press coverage regarding these two matters.

In addition, we are PLEASED to announce that we are engaging in a 3rd judicial matter - we have laid charges of Contempt of Court against the developers and their lackeys and this matter has been set down for Tuesday - see our press release below.

For all these sets of legal proceedings we are of course going to need to expand our fundraising activities, so please contribute to our legal funds by clicking on this button.

Kind regards,
Edwin Angless

Protest against the River Club building that is in violation of the Interim Interdict
Dear LAC supporters,

As you know, the Liesbeek Leisure Property Trust have elected to ignore Judge Goliath’s historic ruling on the River Club development, by recommencing construction work at the River Club. The OCA and the Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council lodged contempt of court papers today against the LLPT on the basis that their return to construction is in direct violation of the order of the court.

We will be holding an early morning placard and pamphlet demonstration on Monday 11th and Tues 12th July from 6.45am to 9am at the River Club – meet at the TRUP Mound opposite Hartleyvale.

If you are able to join, please let us know so we can plan for numbers.

Please join us to show that you care about the future of Liesbeek River and the Two Rivers Urban Park. Say no to illegal behaviour by big developers who think they can get away with unlawful behaviours.  Say yes to protection of the environment and the intangible heritage of indigenous people.

Thanks
Leslie
The River Club development — when the letter of the law clashes with ecological wisdom
Cormac Cullinan - 7 July 2022

The River Club development in Cape Town illustrates how developments that keep us on an unviable trajectory continue to be authorised. Even applying to court to review those decisions doesn’t solve the problem because courts will only intervene to stop unlawful decisions, not unwise ones.

The Liesbeek Leisure Park Trust (LLPT) is continuing to construct the River Club development in Cape Town, which includes a regional headquarters for American tech giant, Amazon. This despite the Western Cape high court finding that doing so could cause irreparable harm to the cultural heritage of First Nations peoples, and granting an interim interdict prohibiting construction...

The battle for history and a river — the Liesbeek and the River Club site
Lalou Meltzer - 7 July 2022

The fight to preserve the River Club site provides us all with the challenge of finding new ways to secure community needs in a time of ecological disaster.

It is significant that the early colonial history of the Cape has again become a battleground of ideas. Clearly, history is not dead — moribund rather are those interpretations that succumb to old relations of power and don’t look to nurturing a more resilient future...

Letter from one of our supporters
Dear Leslie London,

I have just read your Opinion piece on News 24.:
The spinning approach  used by these developers reminds me of the Costa Areosa attempts in the 1970s to take over Sandy Bay and Karbonkelberg which was eventually stopped  - they used full pages in the Cape Times and a variety of other tactics to discredit the objectors and especially the

" sun worshippers ".  Fortunately the  beauty and soul value of these areas later came to be protected by inclusion in Table Mountain Nature Reserve.

Much public outcry and physical protests and court cases later we can still enjoy the absence of aerial railways and 1000s of houses plus hotels etc. on the slopes.

The drive along that section of Liesbeek Parkway after traffic frenzy on DeWall Drive, N2  and other routes has always been calming and interesting  and will be lost in our CoCT frantic efforts to financially sustain a densifying urban complex where human values often seem be inadequately considered !

Thanks for your efforts and information!

Amazon plans to expand into South Africa in early 2023 - leaked documents
Business Insider - 20 June 2022

Amazon plans to launch its online marketplace in 5 new countries by early next year, even as it dials back parts of its retail business in the US, Insider has learned.

The moves will likely mean more competition for local e-commerce companies, including Jumia, which operates across Africa, and Mercado Libre, a leading online marketplace in Latin America...

LLPT can’t buy truth even though they try
Professor Leslie London, chairperson of Observatory Civic Association, and Tauriq Jenkins, high commissioner of Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council

We write in response to the advertorial (“LLPT files urgent leave to appeal to the SCA against the legally flawed, job killing River Club interdict,” Southern Suburbs Tatler, June 16).

The Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust (LLPT) has again used its economic power to buy advertorial space in newspapers to misrepresent the applicants in our court challenge against the River Club development. We set the record straight by providing you with facts, not falsities...
