Welcome to Walk & Talk, my monthly newsletter to share stories, inspiration, and hope. I’m Kim Knowle-Zeller, mama, pastor, and writer. I’ve lived in West Africa and one summer hiked 500 miles across Spain, and now I call Cole Camp, MO home with my husband, two children, and dog. I love to walk, talk, and share stories. Thanks for being here!

Dear Friends,

I’m at my writing desk, the one that looks out towards the town park. Leaves from our maple trees dance before me. A few kids at the park are barreling down the slide and others are pumping their legs on the swing. A robin hops on the grass. My house is quiet (for the moment). My two kids, Charlotte and Isaac, left with their dad on an errand. We’re all tired and energized from the first night of Vacation Bible School. Plus last week the kids spent five days at an arts camp. On the stove I’m simmering a sauce made of heirloom tomatoes from our garden. The turn of the calendar brought cheers from Charlotte for the start of 2nd grade on the 22nd. The rest of the month is filled with birthdays at the pool and the park, camping, church, work meetings, and a looming book deadline.

But if I look beyond those calendar squares, I glimpse more than just parties and places to be. I see a life made of waking in the morning to feet running down the hall, picking fresh blackberries from our yard and piling them on our cereal, Bible stories read at the table over a meal, dishes left in the sink, laundry to be folded, paints, crayons, and markers colored on paper, requests for snacks, playdates with friends, text messages of encouragement, journals filled with words, bubbles floating through the air. In a word, I see love. I see our life full of ordinary moments laced with extraordinary grace.

The summer season is short, and as the days grow closer to back-to-school, I’m focusing on ordinary miracles. This practice doesn't make the days slow down, but it does help me pay attention to what’s right before me. In no particular order, here are a few of the ordinary miracles from this summer:

The kids reading on the couch by themselves
Making homemade blackberry lemonade
Belly flops and canon balls at the pool
Friends who care, play, and love my children
Twist ice cream cones and chocolate marshmallow shakes
Hummingbirds at the feeder
The first red tomato
Cucumber vines clinging to a trellis
Hot coffee on the front porch
Pen and paper
Wet bathing suits and towels hanging in the bathroom
Sunflowers leaning towards the light
Used up sunscreen bottles
Meals on the front porch
Snack dinners
Wrinkled feet and hands after an afternoon at the pool
The first page of a new book
The last page of a satisfying read
Library holds arriving
Trips to the blueberry field
The turning of the calendar
A summer birthday
Knowing the days are filled with holiness and love
Moments rooted in the here and now
Nestled in God’s grace
Now and forever.

How about you? What ordinary miracles are you witnessing? Hit reply, I’d love to celebrate them with you!

With gratitude,
Kim

Book Update: I have less than a month until the manuscript is due! We have a cover (!) and a title (!) In the upcoming months I’m excited to share more with you! The writing of these devotions has been a gift - a time to remember and give thanks for all the ways God is working in my life. And a chance to share that grace with others. It feels like all my living and parenting and loving is being poured into this motherhood devotional. I’m grateful for the chance to share my words with you, and the hope that God sees us all in the holy work of raising our children. Thank you for joining me on this journey! If you know others who would appreciate my words, sharing my writing with them is a great gift. Forward them this email and have them subscribe, or send them to my blog where they can read past writings of mine.

Take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention.
-John O'Donohue

My Favorite Things

Come join me over zoom this Thursday, August 4th at 7 CST for a conversation on rest and retreat. The event is hosted by Boldcafe. Café is an online magazine and podcast for and with women.

A few years ago I wrote Retreat where you are, a guide for taking your own retreat wherever and whenever you can.

"As the school year begins, I’m in no hurry to sign up for school extracurriculars or volunteer opportunities. Rather, I’m open to seeing where I can create more space in my days. Where can I leave room to marvel at God’s creation and the laughter of my children? When can I find moments to sit with my family, talking or playing a game? Where can I pause and offer prayers for God’s people?"

"Thank God for broader horizons that stretched my imagination and the widest promise of the stretching sky above, whether blue with hope or stormy from change. The flashes where I felt myself small on the earth and gathered back into the mystery of the universe. Thank God for all of it. For wild paths and ordinary sidewalks. For wobbly stroller wheels and weathered hiking boots. For well-worn paths and unknown wilderness. For rising after stumbling.” Love this reflection from Laura Fanucci on 4 Ways to Walk

Speaking of walking, I love this comic on types of walks. I’m always up for a chatty walk with a friend!

I love my friend Rachel’s newsletter and her reflection on the power of place and asking questions.

An essay on fitted sheets that’s not really about fitted sheets.

With Lutheran World Relief, I created a free Bible study to use this summer with your congregation. Seeing Our Neighbors is a three-week study based on Matthew 25:31-46. Using Scripture, images, the practice of Visio Divina and prayer, invite your congregation or small group to see how God is calling God’s people to reach out in love to neighbors across the street and across the globe.

With my creative friends through Exhale Creativity I participated in a blog hop on Ordinary Inspiration. A few of my favorite reads from there include writing on ordinary messes, and a poem on time alone.

My favorite motherhood blog, Coffee + Crumbs, takes a sabbatical every August; so while they’re not creating any new content, they’ve curated a list of things to read and listen to this month

What I’m Reading: Kelly Corrigan is a master storyteller and I flew through Tell Me More which is a collection of essays on the hardest phrases she’s learning to say in her life. A few of my favorites: No and This is it. Flying Solo by Linda Holmes was a delightful story about a woman uncovering family secrets that take her on a journey of self-discovery and new love.

What I’m Cooking: My son turned 5 on July 31st! He requested lemon crinkle cookies after enjoying them at a restaurant. This recipe did not disappoint for both kids and adults at his pool party! And if you have an overabundance of zucchini, I love this easy blender recipe for zucchini muffins.

Look, I want to love this world
as though it’s the last chance I’m ever going to get
to be alive
and know it.
-Mary Oliver

P.S. If you enjoy my newsletter, would you consider forwarding to a friend? The best way to support my writing is through sharing and inviting others to know my work. Thank you!

P.P.S. I turn 40 at the end of the month! I’m still making my way on 40 hikes for 40 years. Next month I look forward to reflecting on this birthday, getting older, and where I’m finding strength and beauty on the journey.

I’ll be back in your inboxes the
first Wednesday of September!
