New blue carbon partnership for Western Indian Ocean mangrove reforestation

A new blue carbon partnership was set up and will be working towards “Sustainable Development and Biodiversity Conservation of mangrove forests in Mozambique, through effective implementation of the Ministry of Land and Environment of the Republic of Mozambique and IUCN’s programmes."

Signatory States to the revised Code of Conduct concerning the repression of piracy, armed robbery against ships and illicit maritime activity in the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden Area, have agreed a raft of measures to combat new and emerging threats to maritime security.

The WIOSAP Project held its sixth WIOSAP PSC in Nosy Be, Madagascar. The meeting provided strategic guidance for effective implementation of WIOSAP’s activities based on its Mid-Term Review (MTR) findings and recommendations.

New declaration to help save our oceans

World leaders adopted a landmark declaration at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon to scale up science-based and innovative actions and address the ocean emergency of habitat loss, ocean acidification and ecosystem degradation. More than 150 countries agreed to take actions to strengthen, among other things, marine pollution, blue economies and marine protected areas.

Webinar – Connecting to heal our oceans in the WIO Region

The Western Indian Ocean Early Career Scientists network (WIO-ECSN) and its country chapter of Tanzania (WIO-ECSN Tanzania) will be hosting an online webinar. Ocean experts in different fields in the WIO region who will address the oceanic challenges from Tanzanian perspectives and finally set common goals that will deliver our ocean from these pressing challenges.

This side event at the High-Level Political Forum, 2022 builds on the high-level commitments that have been made since the launch of the initiative with political and government leaders from the region. The Restoration Barometer

The Restoration Barometer a tool already used by governments to track the progress of restoration targets across all terrestrial ecosystems including coastal and inland waters. It was designed for countries that have committed to restore landscapes under international goals or agreements. The Barometer provides an opportunity for national and sub-national governments to simplify and streamline reporting on their restoration commitments and can help track and record progress towards global goals.

How can marine fisheries add millions of tonnes to Africa’s catch

Africa produces seven million tonnes of marine fish a year. However, the growth in supply can’t match the growing demand. A study evaluating the potential for development of fisheries and aquaculture in the region found that that despite the pressures fisheries face, there is enormous potential to increase the productivity of the fisheries.
