Monday 1st August 2022,

Kia orana Bradford ngutu'are tangata,

Welcome back to your Term 3 weekly Monday newsletters.  It is Cook Island Language Week and a super opportunity to celebrate the beautiful Cook Island culture (peu).

One of the five key competencies in the NZ Curriculum that we focus on regularly here at Bradford is relating to others. Perspective plays a vital role in our ability to form and maintain positive relationships.  Perspective helps us to understand situations from other positions; to consider other beliefs, experiences and view points. This gives us a better understanding and greater empathy. It also reduces bias, judgement and conflict.

I have included in this newsletter below a traditional tale of discord between the people of Rarotonga and Aitutaki that is a great example to share with tamariki of how changing our perspective can lead to glass half-full instead of half-empty thinking.

As adults parenting in trying Covid times and facing increasing financial impacts on whānau that test our mental health, I continue to encourage anyone requiring support to please reach out confidentially.  This support also includes access to food - we don't want anyone in our community hungry!   Arai Te Uru Marae has also opened Pataka Ora Community Kitchen offering free kai for all at the local marae on Shetland Street.  Further details can be found here:  https://www.facebook.com/PatakaOra

As of next week, we are reinitiating the breakfast club at school for all tamariki that would like a bowl of Weetbix before class. It is a great opportunity to sit down at 8:30am and come together for a chat (as well as filling tummies ready for learning).  If your child would like to join us then please send to school a named bowl and spoon which we will wash daily and keep here.

So far we have a small number of caregivers registered to attend our special caregiver evening with Paul Rangiwahia.  There are still many spaces and time to register if you have not had a chance to do so yet, please let us know via email if you'd like to join us.

A reminder that we have school photos next week and swimming continues weekly on Wednesdays.

OUR  TANEMAHUTA  POU  REINSTATED ...
Despite the rain, it was super exciting on Monday unveiling our new Tanemahuta pou designed by Alex Whittaker (a Kāi Tahu expert carver from Puketeraki Marae), especially for Bradford School.

Kane Holmes-Haweturi performed a karakia and also shared an interesting local purakau about the area surrounding the school.  Room 6 performed a Kāi Tahu waiata that they had recently learned (acknowledging Kāi Tahu as mana whenua) followed by a whole school performance of our school waiata Te Kahui Kahurangi.

URGENT REQUEST FOR MORE HELP!  PLEASE CONTACT THE BRADFORD TEAM IF YOU CAN COMMIT TO  A THREE HOUR SHIFT ON THE WEEKEND OF SATURDAY 27TH AND SUNDAY 28TH AUGUST CHEESE ROLLING FOR OUR ANNUAL LEOTC FUNDRAISER.

IT IS A REALLY GREAT WAY TO GET TO KNOW OTHER FAMILIES WHILST LISTENING (AND THE ODD BIT OF SINGING), TO MY PLAYLIST OF NUMBER ONE SONGS THROUGH THE DECADES - YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS OUT!

THE FUNDS RAISED BENEFIT ALL AGE TAMARIKI IN THE SCHOOL AND IF EVERY FAMILY CAN PLEASE AIM FOR SUPPLYING ONE ADULT FOR JUST ONE CHEESE-ROLLING SHIFT THEN IT SUDDENLY BECOMES VERY DO-ABLE.    THANK YOU :)
Bradford's Board of Trustees is looking for whānau of our tamariki who are interested in being a part of our School Board.  The Board elections are this September.

This is a great way to be involved in the running of the school and have a greater understanding of the work that goes on behind the white board.

So if you feel you would like to be involved or would like to find out more information please contact the Board Chair;

Snow Day Procedures for all primary and intermediate schools, and DKA Dunedin Kindergartens between Mosgiel to Port Chalmers to Waikouaiti

There is a group of principals who liaise with local Police, Dunedin Taxi companies, and also look at the DCC webcams to check on the weather around the city if there is snow forecast or settling.  This group then decides if a widespread closure or late start will be needed to get tamarki and staff safely to school.

This announcement is made on the radio stations of Classic Hits and Breeze (Media Works).

However, Principals can also make an individual decision for their school, particularly if they can’t safely get staff to school from their homes on the hill suburbs. You will receive an email via the Office email and Seesaw as soon as a decision is made if this is the case for us.   If in doubt please check emails and Seesaw before sending your child to school.

Bradford School's Enrolment Zone officially ceased at the end of last year.  What this means is that we can return to accepting student's from beyond the Bradford boundary that may like to join our special place. In the past, it has been really heartbreaking having to turn away prospective families who were not in Zone.

If you know of families who are interested in attending Bradford School we encourage you to please let them know we are now accepting students across all year levels for 2022.  Equally if you have a younger child who you are intending to enrol, we ask that you please let Sonja know so we can put them on our list.  This forward planning assists greatly in our staffing and classroom configurations to ensure we deliver the best adult to student ratios we can for our tamariki.
