VCAT Decision Update on 268 Nelson Place
As most members will be aware, HBYC along with the Hobsons Bay City Council and a community group lead by Lynn Georgiadis objected to the design of the drystack which is planned to be built next door to HBYC.  Since late last year there have been a series of VCAT hearing days at which HBYC has been represented by our solicitor Michael Champion.

Yesterday, VCAT published its decision to grant a permit for the development.  There are some conditions to the permit however these are not substantive.

This decision, while not unexpected, is disappointing as the development and associated jetty will have an impact on HBYC, both visually and operationally.  There are certain Port of Melbourne Planning Scheme conditions did impact on the objectors' ability to put forward their case.

I would like to sincerely thank Michael Champion, Daniel Edwards and James Livingston who have led the objection on behalf of the club.  Their contribution in support of HBYC is immeasurable.

I will keep you all informed of further developments as they arise.

Tony Dawson
Past Commodore

Sailing

Hello everyone

Congratulations to Paul Neilson and the Tevake II crew on achieving 6th on AMS in last weekend's ORCV Winter Race Two.  Other HBYC boats are best left unmentioned as it was a case of the 'horse latitudes' moving south for the weekend and local knowledge prevailing...  Refer to the the media release below.

Brass Monkey and Dragon Force boats next weekend.

Thank you to Royal Yacht Club of Victoria for lending us 'Royals 3' as the Committee boat for Saturday's races, with 'Privateer' out of action as she is presently undergoing major maintenance.  Thank you also to Andy Warner, Sail Manager, RYCV for undertaking 'driver' duties for the day.

In the meantime, we are looking at ways of building sailing skills for new crew, stay tuned for a new 'mentoring program' to be announced soon.

STOP PRESS, 'Merlion' is now in Yapoon, but lookout Eddie, 'Ikon' is leaving soon and trying to catch up...

ORCV Winter Race Two

Patriot was the clear winner in a race of snakes and ladders. Local knowledge as the winds softened gave Jason Close, skipper of the J133 ‘Patriot’ the advantage to win overall in a fleet of 34 yachts in Saturday's ORCV Winter Series 30nm race to Blairgowrie.

The mixed fleet competing in the racing and cruising divisions started out just after 9.30am using a shortened course start line off Ricketts Point on the thirty-nautical mile race.
HBYC were represented by Tevake II (see picture of crew) and Onyx.

Southern Wooden Boat Sailing

If you are into wooden boats, check out 'Southern Wooden Boat Sailing'.
www.southernwoodenboatsailing.com

For over 25 years, the small team behind SWS have been passionate sailors and supporters of wooden boats in Australia and New Zealand.

Throughout this time, they have become increasingly aware of a huge grass roots interest in this part of the world for the culture, history and practice of sailing and using these special craft.

While there are plenty of niche organisations doing a wonderful job keeping their particular interests going, there has never been a dedicated place to turn to for all the news information and discussion around timber sailing boats.

SWS Aims To Be That Place.
