Jul/Aug/Sep 2022 Newsletter

President's Message

Welcome to a new version of the NANP Newsletter. After the unexpected resignation of the previous Newsletter Editor, I have temporarily taken on the task as Newsletter Editor until a replacement can be found. In an effort to publish, at a bare minimum, a quarterly newsletter to the membership, I have looked for ways to streamline the production of a newsletter. Following current technology and newsletter trends, I elected to publish an email based newsletter that is computer, tablet, and cell phone friendly. I welcome any and all input on the new format.

Plans for the 2022 Navy Photographers Reunion in San Antonio are well underway. Our coordinators, Gary Mann and Mike Mullen, have been working hard putting together the three day event which includes our traditional Meet & Greet, the Banquet, the NANP General Meeting, along with an after hours trip to the Alamo. They have also researched and provided handouts for the many other opportunities in San Antonio for those who want to strike out on their own. Those handouts are available on the NANP website.

Currently there are 31 Navy Photographers and guests registered to attend the San Antonio reunion. I believe there are also some who have already booked a hotel room but have not registered for the reunion yet. I fully expect the number of attendees to increase over the next three months. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Finally, maintaining a website and putting out a newsletter can sometimes be a challenge. I'm currently serving as both webmaster and newsletter editor. It is tough coming up with content to share with the membership and all Navy Photographers on our email list. Although I don't frequent Facebook, when I do pop in each week, I see many great stories and photos shared by all. If you have a great long-form story to tell or some great photos of shipmates to share, I ask that in addition to putting them on Facebook, you also email them to the NANP Webmaster at nanpwebmaster@gmail.com. I can't guarantee that I will be able to use everything I receive, but I will do my best to figure out something.

If any NANP member is interested in being the Newsletter Editor or in being an Assistant Webmaster, please contact me using the webmaster email address above. A short resume of your qualifications and samples of your work would be appreciated.

New Scholarship Program

As voted in at our November 2021 General Meeting in Pensacola, the NANP now offers a Scholarship Program. The NANP will award one (1) $500.00 Scholarship yearly. To see the rules and application requirements, along with downloading the application to submit, follow the link below.

2022 NANP Scholarship Program

Sammy Solt, our Awards Chairman, has graciously donated an additional $100 to the 2022 scholarship award to get the program going. Sammy asks his fellow shipmates to donate in kind, so that we can perpetuate this program.

ATTENTION: The deadline for submitting scholarship applications is normally July 15th of each year. This year, we've extended the application date to August 15th, 2022.

San Antonio Reunion

On behalf of NANP Board, I welcome you to our 2022 Reunion in San Antonio, Texas. While San Antonio is not the oldest city in the United States, the city of San Antonio, is the seventh-most populous city in the United States, second largest city in the Southern United States, and the second-most populous city in Texas as well as the 12th most populous city in North America with 1,434,625 residents in 2020. Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city became the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas in 1731. The area was still part of the Spanish Empire, and later part of the Mexican Republic. It is the state's oldest municipality, having celebrated its 300th anniversary on May 1, 2018.

No mater if you are interested in history, art and culture, sports, good food, or just site seeing, San Antonio has much to offer. The wonderful thing about it, except for a few missions, most things to see and do are within a short walk from the hotel. For those that want to venture a little further out, or don’t have the ability to walk a half mile, the hotel has advised Uber is the best way to go. Uber only charges for distance and not for time which is good because of all the road construction going on in the city. You also have the opportunity to tour the River Walk area by boat with GO RIO Cruises being available right around the corner from the hotel in front of the Iron Cactus Restaurant.

This year the NANP has set up something very special for you. We are doing a special evening tour of The Alamo. This will allow you to retrace the footsteps of the past in the solitude of an Alamo after-hours tour. Your exclusive visit will include a personalized tour of the Church and the Alamo Exhibit after normal operating hours. One of the very special inclusions in this tour will be your ability to take photos (NO FLASH ALLOWED) inside the Alamo. The Alamo is considered hallowed ground so hats must be removed upon entry into the sanctuary. If you want to know more about the Alamo’s history, go to this website. https://www.thealamo.org/

New Home For Email List

Recently, the NANP Webmaster moved the NANP email list used for this newsletter and other correspondence to a new service. While doing so, he spent several weeks cleaning up the list by updating email addresses, formatting the names uniformly, and removing deceased shipmates.

Out of the 1350 emails addresses on the list, approximately 200 of them have no names associated with them. As part of the process of cleaning up the final 200 addresses, your name as recorded in the email list will be seen below. Through automation, each email is unique and will only have your name on it.

YOUR NAME IS: <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>

If your name does not appear above, please go to the bottom of this email and click on "Update Subscription Preferences." A second email will be generated to you by the new service. Following the links in the second email will allow you to change your email address if needed and also add your first and last name.

This same procedure can be used by anyone wanting to change their email address or their names. Some may want to change the first name we use in our correspondence. i.e. those listed as Thomas may prefer Tom. Williams may prefer Bill.

Any changes made is for email correspondence only. They will not transfer to the master NANP and Photographers Past & Present lists maintained by Jerry Billings.

You can also email any changes to the webmaster at: nanpwebmaster@gmail.com
