Fire Cause Determined for Thurston Fire

(Manhattan, Kan., July 11, 2022) — Manhattan Fire Department investigators along with Riley County Police Department officers, determined the cause of the fire at 901 Thurston St. on Sunday, July, 10, was intentional.  Mahbooba Babrakzai, 37, of Manhattan was arrested in connection for four counts of aggravated arson. Babrakzai remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $50,000.
 
The building is a 1-story duplex with the address being 901/903 Thurston St. Occupants were in the building when the fire was started.  Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $50,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Alexander Jost of Hillsboro, KS. 
 
Riley County Police Department will handle any further release of information regarding the arrest.
