Kite, along with other musicians and artists, will be performing a new composition, part of Raven Chacon's For Zitkála-Šá exhibition presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The title of the series refers to the Yankton Dakota composer and musician Zitkála-Šá, who lived from 1876 to 1938. As Chacon has written, “In the early twentieth century [Zitkála-Šá] was known as a composer, writer, editor, teacher, and political activist. Several of her works chronicled her early struggles with identity; as an orator, many of her speeches brought awareness to the systemic oppression of Native people. As a composer and musician, Zitkála-Šá taught violin, later writing the libretto and songs for The Sun Dance Opera (1913), the first American Indian opera.”

Kite, along with other contributors, wrote a section for the new book of scores, For Zitkála-Šá, by artist and composer Raven Chacon.

Paying tribute to Yankton Dakota writer, musician, and activist Zitkála-Šá (b.1876), this publication is structured through a series of scores for thirteen contemporary female Indigenous performing artists: Laura Ortman, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Suzanne Kite, Barbara Croall, Jacqueline Wilson, Autumn Chacon, Heidi Senungetuk, Ange Loft, Joy Harjo, Carmina Escobar, Olivia Shortt, Candice Hopkins, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. For Zitkála-Šá is supplemented by texts by each artist and a contextualizing essay by Chacon.

Forge Project is hosting a talk and conversation with Meranda Roberts (Northern Paiute and Chicana) and Kite (Oglala Lakota) on Indigenous research methodologies and ways of knowing, and how those anti-colonial frameworks can disrupt institutional knowledge keeping, in conservation and preservation but also in archives and collections management, curation and installation design, artist and community collaborations, and even accompanying text and publications.
