Ten Years After Higgs Boson, the Hunt is on for New Breakthroughs in Physics
Last week was the ten-year anniversary of the Higgs boson, the elusive particle that completes the reigning theory of matter known as the Standard Model. Carleton Physics professor and deputy spokesperson for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, Manuella Vincter, was recently interviewed about the anniversary of that Nobel Prize-winning milestone and how now researchers will once again switch on the LHC to spin scientific gold.

New Frontiers Funding for Research Using AI to Provide Better Supports for Students with Disabilities
School of Computer Science professor, Majid Komeili, is working to explore whether artificial intelligence (AI) can support the work of disability service professionals in assessing student support needs to benefit both the service providers and the students with disabilities. Their research will develop a machine learning prototype that will be able to analyze assessment data, ask follow-up questions, and interpret student responses, to ultimately suggest recommendations for supports.

Protecting Urban Trees: Carleton Research Aims to Minimize the Threat of Invasive Insects in a Changing Climate
A post-doctoral research fellow in Carleton University’s Department of Biology, Emma Hudgins, is looking into the impacts of invasive insects to produce the best pest management strategies and in turn protect urban trees across Canada. Her research is rooted in the management actions that can be taken to change the trajectory of invasive species’ spread to limit the impacts on urban trees.

Protecting Lakes and Shorelines: New Partnership Brings Solutions Amid Urban Exodus
A new initiative led by Environmental Science and Biology professor, Steven Cooke, is examining the changes and pressures impacting aquatic ecosystems in lakes and shorelines around Ontario. The research seeks to develop a stronger scientific base on what is happening to these ecosystems, and what must be done to protect them.

Carleton Awards Neuroscience Student and Others Funding for EDI-Related Research
The Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Research Award has been awarded to Neuroscience Student, Priya Van Oosterhout, whose research will discuss racial disparities in substance use research. Priya and the other students will present their research process and findings during Carleton’s annual Inclusion Week in Fall 2022.

Earth Science Curator Assumes Role of President of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES)
Beth McLarty Halfkenny, Curator and Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Earth Sciences has recently been appointed to the role of President of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences. The Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences is an umbrella organization that represents a federation of Earth Sciences societies and associations across Canada.

Coronavirus Resources
Carleton University is following the advice of Ottawa Public Health, the Ontario Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario, and the Public Health Agency of Canada for the latest information about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and recommendations for prevention. Carleton’s Coronavirus website contains a summary of facts from these health agencies as well as answers to questions Carleton faculty, staff, students, and the community may have.
The university has also prepared a list of frequently asked questions regarding COVID-19. Review the FAQ to ensure you are up to speed with the latest information and updates.
