Dear Hillingdon Parents

The Parent Champion network was set up to support parents who are concerned about their teenagers’ wellbeing, due to any of the following; school refusal, substance misuse, vulnerability due to additional needs, social, emotional or mental ill health.

Brilliant Parents provide structured training to enable our volunteer Parent Champions the opportunity to develop compassion and understanding for parents in potentially isolating situations while gaining valuable and transferable skills for life and work.

If you are a parent with experience of moving through challenging times with your teenager, we would love to hear from you.
You can call Sarah on 07495 024 449 or email sarah.rust@brilliantparents.org

Online Safety...What does it all mean?

10 years ago, 5 years ago, even just 6 months ago, online safety meant something different to what it means now. There are forever new trends emerging it seems, and patterns of behaviour we are not yet familiar with. So how do we stay on top of it?

Here are some links with up-to-date information and guidance.

Parenting Apart Programme

The Parenting Apart Programme (PAP) supports parents who are going through conflict, divorce or separation, where relationships have broken down. It also supports the emotional wellbeing of children during this difficult time.

The PAP offers a supportive environment for both parents, so they can work towards an agreed co-parenting relationship and to compile a Parent Working Agreement (with the support provided by a PAP practitioner).

It is designed as an early help offer, where no safeguarding concerns have been identified and it is safe for children to have contact with either parent.

The programme lasts 4 weeks and involves 5 sessions, which can be held face-to-face or virtually.

The initial session takes place with each parent and then there are 3 joint sessions with both parents, which would result in a Parent Working Agreement.

Both parents must give consent to participate in the PAP.

What are the benefits?

  • Reduces the time and expenses of court proceedings and solicitors' fees.
  • Improves communication skills between parents.
  • Reduces parental stress and anxiety.
  • Children are able to continue to have relationships with both parents.
  • Improves the emotional and mental wellbeing of children.
  • Creates a more stable environment for children between homes.
  • Builds a better co-parenting relationship.
  • Gives parents a better understanding about what is best for their children.
  • Improves relationships between parents and children when a significant change has taken place.

PREVENT
Last month the Parent Champions received some excellent training from PREVENT a safeguarding programme for Parents, to help understand what extremism is, how to spot the signs and practical examples of what we can do if we have concerns.
It was really insightful, especially learning about the various means through which children can be drawn in via computer games and apps.

Some of the feedback given:

'Thought it was really good, the trainers were great. Brilliant to get some practical info which was put together well, and was engaging. I wasn’t aware how much it goes on, and also the different avenues being used to groom - ie Robolox'.

'It was a knowledgeable session. Notably: Taking an interest in games children playing and asking questions around what they are looking at. Also some keywords like 'Pepe the frog' and other resources that were shared. It was excellent in making parents aware of the gaming world and how to act safely on behalf of children'

If you are interested in this 90 minute training session, contact Sarah 07495 024 449
