Understanding what people think and do about well water contamination
Measuring community members’ understanding of environmental health topics and self-efficacy to act on that knowledge can help researchers and educators better tailor interventions to meet the needs of communities. A team of NIEHS-funded researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Arizona, worked with residents who were concerned about their well water quality. Meet the Inaugural CRCE Scholars
The Center for Resilient Communities and Environment Scholars Program recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development of the Center for Resilient Communities and the Environment and to its mission, aims, and objectives. Participation as a CRCE Scholar is by invitation from the Center. Scholars are selected based upon current and past collaboration with the Institute on interdisciplinary proposals, projects, and scholarship, as well as distinguished accomplishments within the individual’s discipline. UNC-Chapel student team wins inaugural North Carolina Sea Grant’s Coastal Resilience Team Competition
In March, a team of UNC-Chapel Hill students was named the winners of the North Carolina Sea Grant’s first Coastal Resilience Team Competition for their research on ecosystem function in New Bern. Now, led by Anne Smiley, the team will work to further implement their research on coastal resilience. Smiley and her team will research and assess the impact of climate change and other ecological factors on the ecosystems surrounding New Bern, which has been heavily impacted by flooding. Most recently, New Bern saw an estimated $100 million in damages as a result of Hurricane Florence. Read more
