Beaver Coexistence Work
in the Teton Wilderness
Last week our Executive Director, Loren Taylor, traversed the Teton Wilderness to support beavers and encourage coexistence. Last fall Wyoming Untrapped initiated our Beaver Coexistence Program, a programed designed to reduce trapping and lethal removal of beavers at the community level. Unfortunately, when beavers cause property damage they are often lethally removed by traps. However, WU is working with landowners and land managers to provide nonlethal conflict solutions that allow beavers to remain on the landscape.
WU is working to provide a nonlethal solution to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in the Teton Wilderness, where a beaver dam is causing flooding of a heavily used bridge. WU will be working with the USFS to install a diversion dam at this site later this year that will return the bridge to usable conditions and allow the beavers to remain in place and free from traps!
