Maitahi-Bayview plan change hearing
Friends of the Maitai has worked with expert evidence from Cawthron to make a submission to RMA panel. The submissions will be heard at the Rutherford Hotel, Maitai 2 Room – 27 Nile Street West, Nelson. The Hearing starts at 9am, Wednesday 13 July, with the first two days devoted to speakers from the development consortium.

Please come along and support Steven Gray from FOM and Roger Young from Cawthron, speaking on Wednesday July 20 in the later part the first morning session which runs from 9am – 10.30am.

There are other FOM members speaking on their own behalf on Friday 15 and Tuesday 19 July, with Monday 18 devoted to the evidence from Save the Maitai. You can view the full speaking schedule at the portal (link below) which also has a link to Council’s YouTube Channel that people can click on to view the hearing.

The FOM submission asks for the plan change to be rejected unless there is robust protection of:
  • Water quality in Kaka Stream and the Maitai River
  • Aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity
  • The amenity value of the valley and its swimming holes.
Help us protect this!
Volunteer Expo
Friends of the Maitai gathered up a few new members keen to help with water monitoring and plant care at the recent Volunteer Expo, held at the Annesbrook centre on June 25. It’s interesting to see just how many diverse opportunities there are for people to give their time to help others in our region. The groups represented ranged from other conservationists, through to Broadgreen House, the Nelson Women’s Centre and St John.

Planting Day for your diary
There is still one planting day left this winter, so get your boots out and enjoy the warm feeling of contributing to our future. The planting is at the wetland adjacent to our Groom Creek restoration, near the Maitai Campground.
This is a Council partnership with Nelson Tasman Multicultural and celebrates the journeys people have made to call Whakatu Nelson home. Food and hot drinks on offer plus activities for kids.
DATE: August 20 (rain day 27/8)
TIME: 1pm – 3pm
Friends of the Maitai’s ongoing costs are low, but we always welcome donations and would love to hear from any supporters who feel they could make a regular contribution.
One coffee a week costs $16 a month - just to put it in a day-to-day context.
