Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
It has been a great treat to witness the end of a full Summer term at Belhaven. Sport, Art, Drama and Music combine as the children celebrate their academic achievements in passing their Common Entrance or, lower down, concluding another year with a set of internal exams. Please click here for the full list of Belhaven Prize winners at the end of this academic year.
It is also the time of year at which we say goodbye and thank you to our Leavers. What a talented group they have been.
As they step out into the wider world, it is important to remember that humility is the key to further success. Talent speaks for itself when not obscured by pride and so as their Prep school chapter ends, it is worth remembering the excellent advice passed on by Rory Lawson (originating from his Barbarians’ captain Paul O’Connell) at our Leavers’ dinner: ‘All I ask of you is that you are world class at the things that require no talent.’
I hope that the Leavers will remember that advice as they walk into a new environment for the first time in September – shake a hand, look a stranger in the eye and smile.
Have a wonderful summer holiday.

Electrifying Talk Lights Up Belhaven Leavers’ Options |
|
I was very fortunate to have sat opposite Dr. Mike Capaldi on a train south from Dunbar. Sparking up a conversation with a stranger on public transport is one of those very non-British things to do, but how glad I am that I did!
After a fascinating hour to Newcastle, where Dr. Capaldi is the Dean of Innovation and Business at the University, he had agreed to talk to our Leavers as part of their post-CE programme.
For an hour last week he held Form 1’s attention rapt as he outlined the job opportunities that will be available to them all when they leave school, and how they might therefore focus their attention and efforts between now and then. Dr. Capaldi explained how our futures will be defined by those that can solve the issues surrounding electrification or synthetic fuels – and the questions that were asked showed that these children are ready to take up the challenge.
Thank you! |

Leavers 2022 |
Please click here for the Leavers’ Profiles and a video montage of images from their time with us, focusing particularly on these last two years.
It has been a turbulent time to be in education and for them all to have passed into their senior school of choice and to have succeeded so joyously in the classrooms, on the stage and on the games fields is great testament to their resilience, as well as their talent.
They have made the most of their time back in school, that is to be sure, and they leave with great friendships and that confidence, without arrogance, that should be the hallmark of a Belhaven leaver.
We wish them the best of luck at their new schools – remember that we are always here, in the background, waiting to celebrate your successes and to support you in difficult times. |

Watch the Belhaven Summer Concert! |

Summer Concert Hits New Heights! |
|
After a hiatus of almost three years, Saturday 1st July saw the return of the Belhaven Summer Concert.
Every child in the Prep School was involved in some way, whether as a soloist, part of an instrumental ensemble, as one of the choristers in the three choirs, or as part of the Last Night of the Proms finale.
We were treated to a reprise of two numbers from ‘Mary Poppins’, the Pipe Band saluted us in style and Form 1 soloists showed their full range of talents.
Thank you to Mr. Ellison and to the talented team of VMTs who are making such a wonderful impact on Belhaven’s music. |

Cross Country – the End of Year Report |
|
What a year this has been for the runners of Belhaven – and, of course, that is each and every one of them!
It is an incredibly important part of the school’s offering that all of the children are expected to complete the Thursday run once a week. Some of them love it – some of them do not – but they all grow to respect it, they are all supported to do their best in it and they can all continually improve in it.
Please click below to read Mr. Curry’s full report on a memorable season – many thanks to him for making it all possible. |

Fully-Fledged Belhaven Pre-Prep to Launch in September! |
|
The Pre-Prep promises to deliver a Belhaven education from a younger age, allowing the children to benefit from the space and time that characterises the school and parents to look forward to a period of continuous schooling.
We have produced a new Pre-Prep video with the help of Paolo and his team at Video Production Edinburgh – we are looking forward to welcoming all of our new starters next term!
For the final instalment of this term’s Pre-Prep news, please click here to read Mrs. Johnstone’s report. Very well done to Clara R, who won a trophy that was almost as big as her Shetland pony at the recent Haddington Show! |

Trips Week: Monday 20th - Friday 24th June |
|
The best week of weather in the whole of the Summer term was saved up for this year’s Trips Week and each of the groups had a great time away.
Click below to read a little about each trip and scroll down for the photo galleries to see what everyone got up to!
As ever, my thanks go to the staff for making all of these trips possible – an enormous amount of thought and care goes into planning and executing each one and, in a world of increasing regulation, this is no mean feat! |
