"Circle up for STEM Literacy" provided Olivia Marrs' Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary third grade students with the opportunity to read chapter books (that they were able to keep) with their peers, as well as bring the book to live through STEM activities for each book.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a big hit, as students were able to use toothpicks to "excavate" candy from a cookie and use baking soda and water to see how different candies reacted to the mixture. Students read and added to their home libraries: Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Charlotte’s Web, Esparanza Rising, and Fish in a Tree, participating in accompanying STEM activities for each book. Mrs. Marrs wrote, "Having students be able to get in groups and read with each other while also practicing important reading skills was so beneficial to their learning. My students constantly asked when we were going to read in our chapter books again. Being able to give each student a book of their own is something so special."

Rio Grande Elementary's Schoolwide Grant encourages students to "ROAR" with Excellence! The purpose of this program is to encourage Rio Grande students to do their best each day, showing excellent character traits. ROARS stands for…
Respect
Optimism
Achieving goals
Responsibility
Safe choices
All staff members were involved in the program along with some of the bus drivers. As students demonstrate a positive character trait, they are given a ROARS purple ticket by a staff member or bus driver. Each ROARS purple ticket is worth 20 points. The "ROARS" Store is set up in the front display window with books, toys, games, pencils, erasers and more. As students earn tickets, they have the opportunity to purchase an item(s) from the store.
The major purpose of the program was to see a positive change in behavior as students made good choices and earned points for those choices. At the end of April, a survey was sent to all staff members to receive feedback.
Comments include:
"As a bus driver, I gave out tickets to teach manners, eye contact, saying good morning when spoken to. A good tool to reward good behavior and motive to make better choices."
"I noticed a big improvement in behavior because of the program. I hope we have it again next year!"
