Camille Shafer (née Camille Huguette Crouillebois) was born July 18, 1932. We are very privileged she and Dave chose to make Madison County their home in the 70's, for they transformed the social and creative landscape in this area. Azule, an arts residency and retreat program set in the structure Dave, Camille, and a bevy of local craftsman have been renovating for the past 50 years, is the fruit of their labors, a structure that represents creativity, solidarity, and what love can produce - if given half a chance. Here are some early photos of her, including the only surviving photo of Camille with both her arms.

Happy Birthday Camille 
My husband has so many memories with Camille and Azule. From French lessons, to being chased by their goat, to helping move wheelbarrow loads of dirt from the basement. He even went to France with Camille in the 90s. 
You and azule mean so much to our family. I think we will be able to make it on Sunday and look forward to seeing you. ~Sunswept

Congratulations for turning eighty!!! I made it in march...
I see that you are going on strong with your amazing and glorious AZULE
project. Nathalie and I keep track with it and are so happy with what it has
become.
We hope for many more years of happiness and satisfaction for
yourself, and we hope that the spirit of Azule's beautiful civic and artistic mission
will last and prosper and be a model for others in USA and around the world.

I have worked with Camille for many years and every one has been a great experience. We have seen it all; the funny, the crazy, and the "what was that?"   And we have met so many great artists, and have seen so much amazing talent! It has been a privilege for me. We both turn '80' this year. It seems a time to celebrate our goals met, and some that are still on the drawing board. Camille's plans, of course, will not have a finished page. Because she wants Azule to pass to the young and talented ones who will bring their own ideas and dreams! So Happy Birthday Camille! The future is looking amazing for Azule, because of your clear vision and undaunted spirit! Lynda

Grâce à internet, j'ai appris que Camille fête bientôt ses 80 ans le 17 juillet prochain avec ceux qui ont poursuivi avec elle ce qu'est devenu Azule. En souvenir de mon passage dans les Appalaches en janvier 1993 avec Jean-Marie et toi, voici quelques images, pas toutes très réussies malheureusement, des deux ou trois jours passés là-bas.
Je me souviens de Camille émergeant de la cave qu'elle était en train de creuser avec une pelle et un seau pour nous saluer. L'ambition de ce projet démesuré m'avait fortement impressionnée alors.
Avec le temps, je mesure la puissance de la conviction dans la réalisation des rêves. C'est un exemple qui m'a profondément marquée.

Thanks to the internet, I learned that Camille will turn 80 next July 17th, and I have as well learned what has become of Azule. In remembering the time I spent in Appalachia on January 1993 with Jean Marie and Gwylene, here are some images, not all very well reproduced, of 2 or 3 days spent there.
I have memories of Camille emerging from the cellar she was crossing with one bucket and one pail to greet us. The gigantic ambition of her project really impressed me at the time.
With time, I came to learn the scope of the power of her conviction in realizing her dreams. Her example has marked me profoundly.

I’m so very sorry to miss your birthday Camille, It’s a great accomplishment to have been so artistically involved and will continue to make Azule a destination place. Buy the way if you have a brochure please drop it off at the Gallery.
I want to continue celebrating your birthday with a good dinner at our house/deck in the near future.
