Baltimore Yearly Meeting Sessions

BYM Annual Sessions will be held on line and in person, August 1 - 9 at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Find information here about the events, meetings, and workshops and how to register.  Many events are also offered via Zoom. Hood College now requires advance registration for anyone who will be on campus, so if you'll be attending in person you must register by July 15.  Three days from now. Just sayin'. 

And for the Children ...

Children's Summer Program -  On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month, children of grade-school age will have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises.  Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave with their adult leaders for their program. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.

Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children in grades 1- 5 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house. 

Peace and Social Concerns Committee
Launches Working Groups

Peace and Social Concerns Committee is hosting and launching two working groups and they hope you will join one or both.  One group will focus on developing a minute and actions for Reproductive Rights and Privacy, and another will focus on climate action.

The first meeting of the Reproductive Rights group will meet on July 25, and the Climate Action group will meet on July 26.  Much more information is available here.

What Happened in Meeting for Business on Sunday?

Thirty people were there, but you might have had to miss it.  Here are the draft minutes of the meeting last Sunday. Here's a preview:

• We received and accepted Takoma Park Preparative Meeting's Spiritual State of the Meeting Report.
• We approved naming Jessica Arends to Children's Religious Education Committee.
• We heard a report from Ministry and Worship Committee on the Memorial Minute for Mosi Harrington approved at a recent called meeting; on the release of the document "Quaker Discernment and Decision Making in Adelphi Friends Meeting;" and on a recent Quarterly Meeting on Committee Coordination. 
• We approved the Pastoral Confidentiality Policy brought to us by Trustees.
• We heard a brief report from the Building Committee and the Mid-year Financial Reports from the Treasurer and Finance Committee.

Climate Refugees - Reel and Meal

The evening's discussion will follow two films about climate refugees: 
(1) “Fleeing Climate Change,” focusing on Indonesians, who must abandon their homes because of flooding and Cameroonians whose arable land has become a desert, where crops do not grow, and (2) “The Expanding Desert” which shows the devastation caused by the decision to cut down trees during the Ceausescu era in Romania.  The films will be screened live at the New Deal Café, 113 Centerway in Greenbelt, July 18, 7 p.m. and via zoom.   Zoom registration is required.

The Peace Testimony and the Ukraine War:
A Webinar for Friends

Monday, July 18, 2022, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm.

The BYM Working Group on U.S. Militarism and War brings us an excellent panel to talk about how the peace testimony leads us in considering the war in Ukraine. The panel includes Helena Cobban, Bob Dockhorn, and Michael Beer, all of whom have deep experience, not just with the peace testimony, but specifically with Ukraine and Russia. Truth and Healing Commission
on Boarding School Policies for Indigenous Children

Both the Senate and the House are taking action on the bills that would create a Commission on Truth and Healing to listen to Indigenous survivors of the boarding school era and examine the federal government's responsibility for the truth of that part of history. The list of co-sponsors is growing, but still does not include Senators or Representatives from our area, other than Rep. Raskin in MD and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton in DC.   FCNL is holding an advocacy training on June 19 to support this legislation . An Update on the Lodin Family

Our meeting continues to support the Lodin family from Afghanistan.  This is a big family so support is needed!  Donations can be sent to Marcy Seitel (email and physical address are in Breeze), who will then give the funds to the Lodins.  Funds will be used to supplement their food budget and cover utility costs.  They also need help with tutoring this summer, visiting and socializing for friendship and language skills, applying for jobs online, and more.  Please be in touch if you are able to help.

Our former clerk, Paul Jolly, moved to California and became a poet. (No causal relation to be inferred.)  Enjoy Paul's latest edition of his (almost) monthly poetry blog, which features his poem, "One room school house hall pass".
