Culture of Honor Series Thoughts - Discovering Honor
Matthew 10:40-42 NKJV
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
God rewards the way that we honor the people in our lives. What’s amazing about this passage is that Jesus links rewards to the person we honor, not our gifts or abilities. When we learn to honor the value of the people around us, we get to receive the blessings of what they carry in their lives.
Honor doesn’t have to do with what people do for us, it has to do with what God has said about them. This can be hard for us since God will appoint people to positions that we don’t like or value, but we miss the reward God has for us because we lack honor. Honor is seeing what God sees, not what my flesh, my wound, or my false expectations see. We must see past people’s faults and issues in order to honor who God has called them.
Jesus encourages honoring people according to His value for them by making the most simple comparison. He states that the way we treat little kids and meet their most basic need of thirst will determine the quality of durability of the blessing. Jesus is so interested in us treating everyone with the honor they deserve, that he said it was like giving a cup of water to a thirsty child.
Let’s not forget to honor people according to what God says about them. This will satisfy their soul, the reward will last, and the blessings of God will flow in our lives.
