One Family launch Pre-Budget Submission 2023

One Family,  this week, launched our Pre-Budget Submission ahead of the Department of Social Protection’s Pre-Budget Forum; the Forum took place on Wednesday and our CEO Karen Kiernan and Policy Manager Niamh Kelly were in attendance. In our submission, we urgent Government to act now with targeted supports for low-income one-parent families. We see from our services how struggling families are being forced to choose between heat and food and we are extremely worried for winter 2022 without urgent Government action.

In our Pre-Budget Submission, we are calling for measures including increasing the Qualified Child Increase (QCI) payment by €12 for children over 12 years and €7 for children under 12 years, the establishment of an independent child maintenance agency to protect children from poverty and reduce parental conflict, and equality for one parent families accessing Government supports such as Parent’s Benefit and the Working Family Payment. Gathering of One Family/Cherish 'Boardies'

Huge thank you to our former, and current, Chairs and Board Members who joined us for a lovely evening at our Smithfield offices to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Without your dedication, oversight, guidance and support we wouldn't have been able to reach this milestone and we wouldn't be able to support the amazing families we work with. From all the staff at One Family...Thank you!

Parental Alienation Consultation

One Family made a submission to the Department of Justice consultation on the issue of parental alienation last month.

Parental alienation is when a child is alienated from a parent as the result of the behaviours of another person, usually the child’s other parent. Our submission was informed by our experience of working with parents and children in separated families where there is conflict.

In our submission we:
  • Called for more research into parental alienation in Ireland and for the Government to draw on evidence from abroad.
  • Urged the Government to take a child-centred approach to any legislation, policy changes, services
  • Called for better training for legal, social care and other professionals working with children and parents in separated families.
  • Made recommendations on the need for reform of the Family Law system, the need for prevention and early intervention services to reduce incidents of parental alienation and for greater supports for families who have experienced domestic abuse.
