51 Sussex Ave Park - sign up for project updates
The new park at the south west corner of Spadina and Sussex, next to the apartment building at 666 Spadina, is going to be transformed from plain sod to something more inviting.  The councillor’s office anticipates that city staff will be hosting a public meeting to present draft design options for the park in the fall. The meeting will likely occur during the municipal election black-out period, so the councillor's office may not be able to advertise the meeting.

People interested in attending or otherwise providing input are strongly encouraged to sign up for project updates through the project listserv in case the councillor's office isn’t able to send out notifications. In the meantime, more info about the project is available on the project website.

Re-Greening on lower Brunswick
Residents of Brunswick across from Kensington Gardens Residence have been enjoying a bit of peace and quiet since the heavy construction machinery finished up and cleared out a few weeks ago after more than two years’ work. The renovation of the new Hospice wing in the building at 45 Brunswick is almost complete - and Harbord Village neighbours can start enjoying the ground-level grass and gardens now. Shrubs and a few trees have already been replaced. In the coming months, the large trees lost to construction will be replaced by medium-size native species. From the KH team:

"The majority of the tree planting has yet to happen. We are having 8 mature trees planted on our lawn along the east side sidewalk. The order for these native trees has been placed with Connon Nursery and we will work with them to determine the best delivery date in relation to the fresh sod installation."

Many thanks to our South Central Area reps, Simon Coleman and Susan McDonald, plus Margaret Procter of the HV Gardeners Group, for helping advocate for these results.

Upgraded parking lot at Spadina and Bloor features new e-bike hub
Councillor Mike Layton tweeted earlier this week that a new Bike Share e-bike hub has just been installed in the lot north of the Spadina subway station.  The special charging hub means that the e-bikes recharge on location between rides, without having to be taken back and forth to a central charging depot, so they’re available more often!  Meanwhile, Purolator has also installed a micro delivery hub  - deliveries are stored in a shipping container and delivered throughout the neighbourhood by cargo bike instead of by truck.

Harbord Village is one of Toronto’s “happiest neighbourhoods”
at least according to BlogTO

College St Construction - updates
College Street will be undergoing massive upgrades this fall, between Manning and Bay, starting with TTC track replacement, but also adding improved cycling safety features and a reduction in traffic lanes.  Full project info here.

The transportation department held an information session last month about details of the actual construction and its impact on the neighbourhood. For those who couldn’t attend the slide deck is available here.  Specific info around pedestrian, bike, and transit access, as well as important contact info, is towards the end of the deck.

There will be continuous updates on the status of the construction throughout the project.  In the meantime, if you anticipate any concerns regarding safety, access, business disruption, deliveries, or other issues, you are invited to get in touch with the project team so they can be aware. You can email Michael.Vieira3@toronto.ca.

Kensington Safe Streets Public Consultation
Monday, July 18, 6:30-8:30 pm

The City is planning pedestrian safety improvements throughout Kensington Market as part of its Vision Zero plans. State-of-good-repair work, including sewer and watermain replacements, road resurfacing, and road reconstruction, are scheduled in Kensington Market in 2022 and 2023. While the design work for 2022 has been finalized, the work in 2023 provides an opportunity to install additional safety improvements. Following the first public meeting in September 2021, the City has developed preliminary recommendations and is seeking public feedback.

As many of us in HV shop, work, or otherwise engage in the Market, folks here may want to provide input. If you are interested, you can:

A Message from the Bloor Borden Farmers’ Market

HVRA provides a modest ($500) donation to the BBFM each year to help offset various administrative costs. Here is a note from their Treasurer, Eleanor Levine:

"Thank you HVRA for your generous contribution to My Market, which runs annually beginning in June through October.

"Everyone who comes to the market appreciates the tasty-&-fresh produce and baked goods, plus other excellent foods and wines. The vendors are friendly and helpful. I enjoy watching the young/middle/& older-age people swaying and dancing to the lively music of our talented musicians. The easy-going ambience encourages shoppers/neighbours to engage in conversations with other shoppers and with the vendors. We have a feel-good and a stay-healthy market.

"This is possible because of the help that you gave us this year and for all our past years. We thank you very much.

Warm regards from
My Market volunteers and vendors
Eleanor Levine, treasurer"
