Our Founder's Heart

Grace and Summertime Greetings Family!

The heat of summer serves as a reminder to stay cool, stay hydrated and stay inside (unless you’re like me and love basking sunny-side-up on the beach).  It’s also a good time to relax, read a good book, pen a few poems, revisit your to-dos, paint, decorate, or whatever floats your boat.  Recently, I decided to dive into a hardback by, Joyce Myers, that I’d venture to say… changed my perspective forever.  ‘The Power of Thank You’ was written to shine the light on just how much we have to be grateful for—and how much thanks we owe God for.  While I’d like to think that my expression of gratitude through daily prayer is sufficient, I also realize what a great deal I’ve taken for granted.  How many of God’s benefits in our lives have become a river of flowing blessings that we’ve missed countless opportunities to simply tell Him how deeply we appreciate the depth of His goodness?

This outlook allowed me to reflect, refocus, and give reverence to something much bigger than myself, husband, children, grandchildren, family, friends, work, finances, and material things.  Thus, I decided to dedicate one full week to taking notice of the numerous graces I’ve been granted.  And, I must say, I didn’t run out of blessings to count.  You see, I discovered how many things I sporadically acknowledged God for—for instance, the air I breathe; the strength to walk on my own; the movement of my fingers and toes; the gift of eyesight, taste and smell; the ability to touch, feel and laugh; a heart that never fails to beat; a healthy body and regulated mind; a roof overhead in winter and central air in summer; and the list goes on and on and on.

Without abiding proof that the Lord is constantly with us—mindful of us—and working through us oh what a dismal life this would be!  Most of us get up in the morning and wash our face with a nice warm facecloth just before stepping into a hot invigorating shower.  But many of us forget to turn back and thank the One who made it possible.  Our way of life isn’t just a result of having a career, good credit or a bank account, but it’s of the Lord’s doing that we’ve been given infinite ways to earn a living and can have what we desire.  Turning back to say, Thank You, for even the smallest gift creates a heart posture of gratitude that fills our inner storehouse—and spills over into the lives of those we love.

Today, begin practicing the art of thanksgiving all day, every day, and soon your spirit will be positively filled with optimism—rather than pessimism.  And when we learn to look beyond “people” and “prosperity” we’ll find no greater joy than to know how much God’s “presence” in our lives is the one thing—that ultimately means EVERYTHING.

As always… lovingly and graciously yours,

Carolyn A. Watson

Pearl of the Quarter

From humble Haitian beginnings, Rachelle Blanchard, was raised by her parents in the town of La Plaine until age 21.  However, in 2010, her life and all she’d grown accustomed to took a devastating turn.  Rachelle shared her personal story of survival and recovery from the 2010 Haiti Earthquake that took the lives of family and friends, and devastated the country she once called home.  While this 7.0 quake was reported to last only 30 seconds, it left an aftermath of disturbing images, death and destruction for miles around.  Days after the tremor, Rachelle vividly recalled walking in search of help as she passed corpses that lined the streets—some of which had body parts that had been eaten by pigs and dogs.  Not to mention, seeing dead bodies that had exploded from the intense heat.  “It was a horrific experience and I lost a lot of loved ones,” she sadly shared.  “I learned that houses and material things come and go.  We had to depend on strangers for food and water; there was no electricity or means of communication,” she remembered.

It was this turn of events that compelled Rachelle to move to the USA.  She lived for a short time with a cousin in Florida, before making her home in Connecticut with her uncle and aunt, who she holds in high esteem for being a true blessing in her life.  Rachelle eventually set-off to begin flight attendant school and began working as a flight attendant.  Trying her best to establish a firm foundation, she went back to Haiti for a while and soon rekindled a relationship with an ex-boyfriend.  This connection didn’t last, but gifted Rachelle with an amazing son, Varick, who is now four-years-old and the absolute joy of her life.  “My son saved me.  I was bullied a lot growing up; I was mentally and sexually abused repeatedly from age 6 to 21; I was depressed and suicidal.  It was my son—who is the most loving and caring person I know—that saved me from myself.” Rachelle openly expressed.  We also adored the mannerism of little Varick when he called H.O.M.E. to sweetly thank us for his Lion King bedding, books and toys!

Meeting, Ms. Blanchard, is evident of how much God loves and provides for all of us—especially those who have endured oppression, depression, hardship, and all manner of struggle.  Her positive and cheerful attitude is inspiring and uplifting.  “My blessings are bigger than my problems,” she stated.  "I’m no different than a homeless person, so I cook for them and provide the same food I eat.  I’m living proof there is a God.”  Rachelle and Varick currently reside in Macon, GA.  When we asked how it feels to now have furniture in her home, Rachelle responded: “I was at work when I got the call and I just simply said… God, why me?  I have a couch; I have plates; I have a dresser… the Lord gave me the dresser I wanted!" She cheered and continued, “H.O.M.E. made me realize—I am not alone.”

A Truckload of Love!
Since the pandemic, H.O.M.E. was given a vision to reinvent how we serve our community-at-large both near and far.  Not only do we provide a truckload of furniture and basic necessities to struggling families living in stressful situations locally—but now, God has allowed us to expand our territory and serve even more single mothers and children residing in places like Columbus, Macon, and surrounding Georgia cities that otherwise would not have received this privilege.  Our cup is full to know that it’s now possible for H.O.M.E. to impact even more lives through the gift of tangible love through furniture!!
Diamonds and Pearls

Every diamond deserves a pearl!  H.O.M.E.’s ‘Pearl in Her Purse’ Fund provides financial aid to the diamonds in our community—those heroic mothers who suffer immediate needs such as: groceries, gas cards, bus passes or an overnight hotel stay when they have nowhere else to go.  When you donate a pearl to place in her purse, through a financial gift of any amount, H.O.M.E. can do so much more for a woman who truly need a ‘hand up.’
