Register now! CEV Autumn Volunteering Congress

On 3 and 4 October 2022 in Gdańsk (Poland) we will hold the Study Visit for both CEV Members and partners and members of the European Volunteering Capital Candidates Community (EVCCC). #EVCapital 2024 candidates presentations will be made as well as the CEV General Assembly, and INEAR Seminar. Gdańsk EVCapital 2022 (PL)

On 7 July 2022, the Civil Society Organisations' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) co-hosted with CEV the “Volunteers – Citizens Building the Future of Europe” conference. The conference examined and reaffirmed the societal contribution of volunteers and aimed to create a platform for the exchange of viewsidea-exchanging between various stakeholders from the national, European and global levels. EVCapital 2024 Candidates!

CEV is happy to announce the two EVCapital 2024 candidates: Lviv (UA) and Trento (IT)! The Candidate Certificates were presented in Brussels. Find more about the EVCapital 2024 here.

EVCapital Candidates Community (EVCCC) - SUPA SAPS

The ESC Volunteering Teams "Single Use Plastic Awareness - Stop All Plastic Straws" (SUPA SAPS) project brings together 80 young people from Cyprus, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain to take part in different activities in the 5 host cities, Strovolos, Berlin, Cork Padova and Barcelona. The volunteers had the opportunity to present their initiatives to the Mayors of Strovolos and Cork. EVCapital Candidates Community (EVCCC) - ESC What!

The ESC Volunteering Teams "European Solidarity Corps Waterways Heritage Action Together!" (ESC WHAT!) project brings together 80 young people from Germany, Slovakia, Portugal and Italy to take part in different activities in the host cities of Augsburg, Zvolen/Košice, Santa Cruz and Padova. The volunteer teams’ contribution will provide a much-needed boost to the efforts of local volunteers currently protecting and promoting cultural heritage. The volunteers in Slovakia had an official reception from the City of Košice and contributed to cleaning rivers in Zvolen.

CEV Welcomes New Team Members

In June 2022, Holly Draper, Ross Gower, and Thomas Richomme from the University of East Anglia (UK) joined CEV as trainees funded by the UK “Turing Programme”. Also for the month of June, Ashleigh Grindon and Sophia Lyman joined us as trainees from VUB (BE). Find more about the staff here.

CEV says Thank you and Goodbye

In June 2022, CEV said goodbye to Aquiles Modinos, who joined the organisation in March 2022 as part of the Erasmus Plus training programme. Aquiles provided helpful technical support to the team, and we wish him the best for the future!

Volpris Partners Meeting and Staff training 

On 14-15 June 2022 partners met in Bremen to discuss the implementation of the last Intellectual Outputs: the Volunteers Coordinator training and the Minimum Requirements for Volunteering programmes in CJS. From 19-23 June 2022, CEV representatives took part in the Volpris Short-Term Joint Staff Training Event in Jilava Prison (RO), exploring the Volunteering Coordinators’ Profile in the Prison Context. eQyvol Partners Meeting and Award

On 28 - 29 June 2022, partners met in Brussels to discuss the project's updates and the results of the survey. Also on 28 June 2022, Udruga Za Podršku Žrtvama I Svjedocima (Victims and Witness Support Service) from Croatia won the 2022 eQyvol award as part of this Erasmus Plus co-funded project. DYVO Partners Meeting & Training 

Between 5 & 6 July 2022, DYVO (Digital technologies for validating young volunteers competences) partners gathered in Panevezys, LIthuania for their project meeting to discuss the current situation, development of the DYVO WEB APP and final conference in Brussels. On 5-9 July the DYVO Erasmus Plus project organised a five day intensive transnational training for the DYVO volunteers on Personal Business Model Canvas (PBMC), the methodology to correctly draw the canvas, and to increase awareness of their personal value proposition. Meeting with Volunteer Scotland

CEV Director Gabriella Civico met with the new CEO on 11 May 2022 in Stirling. Find more about them here.

Volunteering Interest Group (VIG) in the European Parliament

On 29 June 2022, the VIG met at the European Parliament hosted by Co-Chairs Michaela Šojdrová, Irena Joveva and Domenec Ruiz Devesa with 25 participants, including the eQyvol Erasmus Plus project partners. Discussed was the European Year of Volunteers 2025, the research on volunteer-based youth work from European Youth Forum, latest updates on the European Solidarity Corps, the report on the implementation of citizenship education actions, the Age Barometer from AGE Platform Europe, and the MEP Volunteer Job Shadowing initiative co-financed by the CERV programme as part of the CEV #CERVIS project was launched. Conference on Civil Society and the Future of Europe

On 30 June 2022, Gabriella Civico, CEV Director, contributed as a panellist at the High Level Conference on Civil Society and the Future of Europe in Paris representing Civil Society Europe. The event discussed the future of Europe and collectively drafted the Paris Declaration, gathering together input to express the needs of civil society to European Institutions.  You can read more here, and find the final declaration here.

Let’s call on the European Commission for a European Civil Society Strategy!

CEV signed this letter, led by Civil Society Europe, encouraging the Commission to launch a proactive strategy towards opening civic space and reinforcing a resilient civil society. The call comes in the context of the closing of the Conference on the Future of Europe, wherein European institutions made promises to respond to the output of the CoFoE, including recognising the important role of a comprehensive European Civil Society Strategy.

CEV Staff Employee Volunteering at Brussels Refugee Centre

Over the month of June, CEV staff dedicated their time at the Porte d’Ulysse refugee centre, helping prepare food for meals, cleaning and drying dishes, and serving food with a smile. You can find more about the centre and sign up to volunteer yourself here.

What EU(K)needs - Bread Making Workshops 

CEV members -  BBBS, Vlaams Steunpunt Vrijwilligerswerk, Plataforma Andaluza del Voluntariado and CVCN have been contributing to the discussion on the Future of Europe by engaging volunteers in this unique Board Game co-financed by the CERV programme of the EU in the framework of the CEV #CERVIS project. The report of all the games, that will be played in at least 14 countries and languages across Europe, will be available later in the year. See the photos here. Fundação Eugénio de Almeida 

The Volunteering Summer School took place from 6-7 July 2022 in Evora. The CEV Director, Gabriella Civico gave a welcome address in the opening session and CEV delivered an Inclusive Volunteering Capacity Building Session in Portuguese to 35 participants, as part of the #CERVIS project co-funded by the CERV programme of the European Union.

WOSM

DG EAC took part in the Brussels 20km run in support of the Scouts’ aid to those affected by the war in Ukraine. The Scouts have helped more than 600,000 people affected by the war through direct supply distribution, transport, accommodation, and educational activities. The funds raised will directly support Ukrainian Scouts in their efforts to provide summer activities for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) over the coming months. Find more here.

Croatian Volunteer Development Centre

On 6 July 2022, the Croatian State awards for volunteering were awarded in a ceremony in Zagreb. Awards were given in various categories, including award for volunteer, volunteer organiser, and volunteer manager. You can read more here.

Volunteer Scotland

15 June 2022 saw the launch of Scotland’s Volunteering Action Plan, an ambitious ten year national agenda for the voluntary sector, with 47 actions identified to strengthen the sector, which will be implemented with continuous reviews and reflections. Volunteer Scotland cooperated with the Scottish government to lead the creation of this plan, with input from 100 participants. You can read more here and access the plan here.

Fundación Hazloposible

Collaborated with Leroy Merlin Spain, to distribute 14 grants totalling 350,000 Euros, to NGO projects in Spain, as part of the first ‘Hogares Dignos' call for grants. The contest focused on projects which improve the lives of people who are at risk of exclusion, such as minors from low income areas, homeless, disabled, and elderly people. You can read more here.

Vereniging Nederlandse Organisaties Vrijwilligerswerk (NOV)

Released an article for organisations wishing to engage with and enable refugees to take part in volunteering activities. This article contains ten tips, with resources and recommendations, for how organisations can best engage refugees with volunteering. You can read the article here.

Volunteer Ireland 

Nominations are open for the Volunteer Ireland Awards, which celebrate and give recognition to local volunteers and community organisers in Ireland who have made great contributions through their actions. Nominations close at the end of August 2022, and you can find more information here.

PFV Discovery Week & Zoom Sessions

Between 7-13 November 2022, PFV will be offering a free French-speaking workshop in Brussels and Wallonia to those who want to discover volunteering in an accessible way. PVF also offers free support tools to organisations who wish to partner with them. You can sign up for the zoom preparation sessions (dates between September-October) and for the taster week here

Conference on the Future of Europe ("Putting Vision into Concrete Action")

The European Commission published a communication to the EP, Council, the EESC and the CoR about the future direction of Europe, highlighting citizen engagement, responsibility, and communication. You can read the report communication here and the press release here.

European Parliament proposed EU Treaties amendments

Following from the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), where reform proposals were developed together with citizens, a majority of the EP have voted in favour of amendments which would remove the national vetoes on EU sanctions. The proposals will be put to a vote by EU heads of government by June 24.

European Parliament - Call for Grant Proposals

Applications are now open for proposals for the Engagement Grants, aimed at organisations and projects focussing on increasing engagement of the diverse range of European Citizens, also encouraging active involvement as change makers in the upcoming European Elections 2024 communication campaign.
You can apply for grants in one of three topics: 

  • Capacity building actions

  • Citizen engagement activities

  • Combination of capacity-building actions and citizens’ engagement activities

Civil Society Prize 2022

The EESC has announced the 13th edition of this award for non-profit initiatives, with two categories: Empowering Young People, and Civil Society for Ukraine. The total prize of 60,000 Euros will be shared between the three winners of each category. The deadline for entries is 31 July 2022, with the award ceremony taking place during the EESC plenary on 14-15 December 2022. More information here, and access the application for entry form here.

European Commission - Guides on Social Innovation

The practical guide for project promoters on social experimentation provides advice for project development using lessons learnt from previous projects financed through the Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI) programme. The Toolkit for scaling-up social innovation looks at expanding on previous successful innovations. It outlines seven steps for making strategic use of the ESF+. TOSCA Trainings

The training and support for organisations active in the Solidarity Corps (TOSCA) is a training activity to develop the capacities of all volunteering organisations in the frame of the European Solidarity Corps programme, in order to ensure quality and impact in their respective projects. Solidarity - Opening the door to new volunteering fields

From 3-7 October 2022, in Vienna Austria, this event will aim to bring together different organisations and interested parties in new fields of volunteering. It is targeted towards both newcomer organisations interested in stepping into ESC volunteering with or without the Quality Label, and experienced organisations interested in finding partners in new fields of volunteering. This paid position is aimed at those with experience in European youth volunteering and research based work, will conduct a mapping and analysis of the existing research and policies on youth volunteering in Europe. Read more here.

5th European Education Summit - SAVE THE DATE!

Hosted by Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, this hybrid event will take place on 1 December 2022 in Brussels and with a webstream will be open to all. More details and the agenda coming soon. 

 

IVCO 2022

From 16-19 October 2022, IVCO will be holding a conference on the theme ‘A New Dawn for Volunteering in Development’, with Crossroads International and the International Bureau for Children's Rights co-hosting. More information here.

Volunteer Aid in Ukraine

Russia’s war on Ukraine has sparked the need for volunteer community groups in Ukraine to provide “virtually all” forms of aid for those in need. The Good on Love shelter in Dnipro demonstrates how volunteer work is impactful, yet in need of recognition and support more than ever. You can read more here.

Reintermediation of Volunteering

VOLUNTAS recently published an article highlighting changing attitudes in the volunteering process, discussing the role intermediary bodies play in this shift - especially in Italy’s context. You can read the journal here.

IAVE's Research Report: "Corporate Volunteering for a Post-Pandemic World"

This new publication gathers research from 80 companies across 175 countries, providing an in-depth look at the current state of corporate volunteering. Topics include: an agenda for the future, corporate volunteering by region, corporate volunteering in the age of Covid-19, measuring impact, managing corporate volunteering, and cross border volunteering. European Youth Forum - New research

This research focuses on volunteer-based youth work, using a sample made up of the International Youth Organisations, National Youth Councils, national and local youth organisations and volunteer based youth workers from 15 European Countries. It looked particularly at the concept and value of volunteer-based youth work and elaborated on its implementation. You can read the report here.

LLLP Campaign

This years’ campaign focuses on investment in education and training. Specifically, LLLP’s aim is to collectively call for a reform in public funding for education and training based on the Charter for public investment in education and training. Access City Award 2023

The ACA2023 is open for applications until 8 September 2022, recognising cities that make significant efforts in increasing accessibility for people with disabilities. You can find more information on last year’s winner, Luxembourg City, and the runner up cities here.
