Churchwide News

Farewell and Thank You
One of the definitions of “maestro” reads, “someone who is skilled enough to be considered an artistic genius.” FUMC Georgetown has been blessed with the music ministry of Garth Olson for nearly six years. In his tenure with us, Garth has strengthened and built one of the premier music ministries in the area. He conducts the choir, leads handbells, and arranges the music for the orchestra. More importantly, Garth’s music ministry is built on relationships and community. He certainly deserves the title of maestro in my books.

I want to ask the congregation to help us in showing our deepest appreciation to Garth as he begins a new season of ministry in South Carolina. First, please plan to attend the reception after services this Sunday. In addition, you may consider sharing a card or gift as we will have baskets at the reception. If you are away or out of town, you may bring your card or gift by the office anytime this summer and we will take care of delivery. Some of you may also want to donate to the recently created Garth Olson Scholarship Fund. Five FUMC students were recently named as the first recipients from this fund. Scholarship gifts can be made directly to the church with “Olson Scholarship” in the memo. Finally, the church will give a gift to Garth to help support his transition.

We are going to miss Garth for so many reasons. I’m going to miss the extra touches and jazzy additions he brings to hymns and songs. Let’s be thankful for ways we are a better church because of his ministry. We know God will continue to work through Garth in his new location and with his new ministry.

Pastor Alan McGrath

Books Looking for a New Home
Our library book downsizing project is nearing completion. We have identified curriculum and theological resources for classes and small groups to use here at FUMC. As a result, there are numerous books looking for a new home. Please stop by the old library room on the 2nd floor across from the elevator over the next several weeks and choose whichever book or books you might like to have for your personal library. All books on the tables and shelves are available. We have donated to pastors of other churches as well as The Caring Place. We will donate any remaining books to the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library for their used books store. Once our book relocation is finished, FUMC class and group leaders as well as FUMC members are welcome to use and return our teaching and learning resources from the new resource library on the first floor.

Volunteer for the Good Samaritan Team (GST) of FUMC Georgetown
First United Methodist Church of Georgetown’s Good Samaritan Team (GST) consists of church member volunteers that are ready to respond to medical events that occur on our property during services and special gatherings. Medical events range from accidental falls, seizures, fainting, cuts, or other possible injuries. The purpose of the GST is to assist and comfort FUMC members and guests who experience a medical need through the event or until appropriate care arrives. Ideally, GST members will be church members in medical professions (active or retired), first responders (police, firefighters, EMTs), or non-medical professions who are trained in First Aid/CPR. However, the only requirement to be a GST member is to be a compassionate care giver who is willing to respond when needed. If you are interested in serving on this team, please contact Scott Finnell at bscottfinnell@gmail.com.
