For the first time ever, the diaries of photographer and designer Sir Cecil Beaton are dramatised for the stage, to accompany his most iconic and lesser-seen photographs and designs.
Beaton's society portraits flattered their subjects; his diaries did not. His wartime photographs showed his versatility; his diaries exposed the cost. Even his triumphant designs for My Fair Lady never stopped his doubts. And his passion for Greta Garbo found fulfilment only in his writing. Blisteringly funny and at times deeply moving, with appearances ranging from the Queen Mother and Elizabeth Taylor to Churchill and Capote, the diaries paint a self-portrait of the 20th century's most compelling dandy.
Sanctioned by Royal author and Beaton executor Hugo Vickers (whose book A Royal Life: HRH The Duke of Kent is currently published by Hodder & Stoughton), this promises to be a highlight of the 2022 Edinburgh Festival.
The diaries are adapted and performed by Richard Stirling, whose book Julie Andrews: an intimate biography was a Sunday Times bestseller, and whose recent credits as an actor include appearances in Bridgerton and The Man who Fell to Earth.
