News & Notes

Greetings, UVCB,

We had a splendid turnout for the memorial gathering for Elisa last Saturday.  Thanks very much for making this such a successful event—and thank you for your flexibility in playing “Balladair,” which we had never played previously.  I had warm conversations with numerous family members afterwards; they were most appreciative, and affirmed that Elisa would have loved it.

We are playing for the Canaan Old Home Days Parade this Saturday morning.  Details appear below, and were first shared in last week's Newsletter.

Thanks again,
and looking forward,

Mark Nelson

Canaan Old Home Days Parade - August 6, 9:00 AM

UVCB's last paying gig occurs on Saturday, 8/6, when we participate in the Canaan Old Home Days Parade as we have in past years.  Currently twelve UVCB musicians have indicated their intent to participate so please check your calendars and sign up if possible.

Our UVCB Trailer will be in use.  Please bring your chair, music stand, instrument, your music, and water.  Parade books will be on the trailer; we encourage you to download large-format copies if you are able to do so.
We should be on the trailer and ready to go by
8:30 a.m.
The Lyme Town Band will also be participating in the parade on their own trailer.

Following the parade, the UVCB holds a brief mini-concert under a tent at Canaan's Williams Field, the start and end location of the parade.
Here is a link to a map of the parade gathering area. A small copy of the map appears below.

I regret I will miss this event due to travel, but I expect you'll have as grand a time this year as we did in 2021. Thank you all for participating in our concerts this summer.   It's been great fun and I look forward to more music in the fall.

Stay well,
Mark

Music  Files

All the music for our parade performances is available in 8-1/2 x 11 format files in parts for each instrument in the folder below.  You may print these for your own use, or use the old small-format books which we’ll have available for the time being. The link to the folder for the other Summer 2022 repertoire is also given below; some of this music will be on concert performances, but not parades.

Parade book music scores are all available in large format in this folder:

Looking forward to making music with you all summer!

Sign-Up for Summer Gigs

Please indicate your availability here.   Please type your name and instrument on a new line. Then go across and note your availability for each gig. Remember to scroll all the way to the right to indicate for each of the dates currently in the works.

Please recheck this list from time to time for new engagements.  For example, we have been invited to play at Wheelock Terrace in September.

Thank you,
Mark Nelson & the UVCB Board
Call for a volunteer:

Kelsey Thayer has resigned her role as our Secretary. I know I write for all of us in wishing you well, Kelsey, thanking you for your contributions over the years, and assuring you that our door is always open to your return.

Current UVCB Bylaws allow the Board to appoint a replacement for Kelsey.  While we don't need to make that appointment now, I ask for a volunteer among our active Band members to consider becoming the UVCB Secretary.

Thank you,
Mark

UVCB Covid Policies

CDC continues to grade risk of Covid transmission in our surrounding counties as “Low.”   However, we all know of current Covid cases among our acquaintances, and the current variant is highly transmissible.

Proof of vaccination against Covid (i.e., basic series plus booster unless unable to do so by virtue of timing) continues to be required to participate in any in-person UVCB event.  Members may demonstrate proof by emailing a copy of the CDC card to mark.nunlist@dartmouth.edu or texting that image to him at 603-448-7901.  At the Board’s direction, Mark Nunlist continues to maintain a confidential record of members’ vaccination status.

There will be occasions when a UVCB member tests Covid-positive.  When this occurs or the Band member believes he or she has been exposed to a Covid-positive individual elsewhere, we ask that the individual notify Mark Nelson and Mark Nunlist.  We can then inform other Band members who might have been exposed themselves by virtue of proximity, enabling them to test / monitor themselves.

A member who tests Covid-positive is welcome to return to in-person UVCB events following completion of the recommended five-day isolation period plus a further five days of mask-wearing around other people and has obtained a negative Covid antigen test (e.g., an “at-home” Covid test).  Band members occasionally announce that they plan to miss an upcoming rehearsal because they don’t feel well.  We applaud that concern for one another.  Please excuse yourself if you have any symptoms of illness, regardless of any test result, and seek medical care and / or covid testing as appropriate.

Of course, the individual’s own healthcare is of paramount importance, and we encourage members to seek - and be guided by - appropriate medical advice.

Thank you all and stay well,

Mark Nunlist
